By Mads Lennon
In Firefly Lane Season 1, Episode 4, “Love is a Battlefield,” Tully gets a significant shock both in the past and present, while Kate finds out something shocking about her mother.
Caution: There are spoilers from Firefly Lane Season 1, Episode 4 below.
The fourth episode of Firefly Lane addresses some of the mysteries presented by earlier episodes. What happened to Robbie and Sean? Who is Chad Wiley?
When we go back to the past, we skip back a little farther than we have earlier this season to see Kate and Tully’s college years. Sean dropped out of college and moved back in with his parents, who have consistently pressured him into joining up with a service, any service. His only ray of sunshine is Robbie, who comes to visit him, but they can’t just fall back into their old habits this time. Robbie has moved on, gotten married to a woman, and they have a baby on the way.
As for Chad Wiley, we find out that he was Tully’s journalism professor, and the pair struck up an inappropriate relationship while she was in his class. Their relationship has just veered toward the romantic in this episode, with Chad initiating a steamy makeout session in an empty classroom. But he pulls away before things can progress further. Given that we saw them sucking face at the bar in Episode 3, we know this won’t be the last time they’re together.
Firefly Lane Season 1, Episode 4 recap: Kate learns the truth about Cloud.
The 1970s segment in this episode is wrought with drama. For starters, Tully and Kate skip school so they can get high on stolen drugs from Tully’s mom, Cloud. They both have fun for a while, and Tully even starts trying to tell Kate the truth she’s been hiding — that her mom doesn’t have cancer, but then Kate starts having a panic attack, and things go sideways.
It’s a downward spiral from there as they try to find refuge at Kate’s house, only to peep through the window and notice Kate’s mother sitting awfully close to a man that isn’t her father. The possibility of her mother having an affair is deeply troubling to young Kate. Seeing how upset her best friend is, Tully suggests they go to her house instead.
But leaving Kate unattended for a moment gives Cloud just enough time to make an appearance and for them to have an awkward conversation about how she doesn’t have cancer. Kate is understandably shocked by Tully’s lies, especially on top of what she just saw her mom doing. She’s gone by the time Tully returns.
As for Tully, she’s concerned she might pregnant from Pat’s rape. She’s more than a little relieved when her period finally starts.
Firefly Lane Season 1, Episode 4 recap: Tully finds out she’s pregnant.
But while the Tully of the past narrowly avoids pregnancy, present-day Tully isn’t so lucky. Or is it the best case of luck, ever? At the end of Episode 3, Kate had found Tully collapsed on the floor. Throughout this episode, she suffers from heat waves, nausea, and a general sense of malaise. A woman at Marah’s piano recital assumes Tully is going through menopause, which seriously spooks her.
The possibility of never being able to have a child rattles her, even though Kate points out she’s never wanted to have kids. Still, Tully always liked the idea that she could have children one day, even if she chose not to. Well, that possibility has finally come knocking because when Kate suggests Tully might be pregnant, the test comes back positive. And I’m guessing Max is the daddy!
Firefly Lane Season 1, Episode 4 recap: Who dies in the future?
We get another brief glimpse into the future with Kate and Marah driving to what we all assume is a funeral. The details are kept sparse. All we discover is that, at this time, Marah is old enough to drive as she takes the car to their secret location. Previously, it seemed like Tully was the likely culprit. Could the baby cause serious health complications that she doesn’t survive?
There is another strong contender — Johnny. One of the plotlines in this episode revolves around the possibility of Kate and Johnny getting back together. They indulge themselves in a steamy hookup that almost leads to sex — until Marah interrupts. And at Marah’s recital, she plays “Time After Time,” her parent’s “song.” Johnny even punches Travis when he sees him hugging Kate, so we know he still has feelings for her.
They discuss the possibility of giving their marriage another try. The problem is the significant obstacle standing in their way: Johnny’s looming departure for his new job in Iraq. Kate doesn’t think it’s fair for him to travel somewhere so dangerous for an extended stay and expect her to be waiting for him to return. Johnny could die while overseas, and it might be his funeral that Kate and Marah are attending in the future.
Firefly Lane Season 1 is now streaming on Netflix.
