Men in Kilts Season 1, Episode 1 recap: Food and Drink
By Ariba Bhuvad
Men in Kilts Season 1 is about to be every Outlander fan’s go-to series in the midst of the current Droughtlander. Sure, it’s not exactly the time-traveling romance, but with Outlander stars Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish at the helm of it, it’s as good as it is going to get for now.
This particular series follows both men as they travel through Scotland and explore its wonders. In this week’s season premiere, they discussed Scottish food and drink. Specifically, they tried all kinds of cuisine special to the country of Scotland, ranging from catching their own seafood and cooking it to going to a Michelin star restaurant to visiting a distillery.
It was quite the adventure, and absolutely hilarious, to top it all off. The friendly chemistry between these two buds makes Men in Kilts an incredibly fun half-hour watch.
I’m personally so excited that instead of the podcast they were supposed to do, it translated into a series (as well as their book Clanlands).
Watching Heughan and McTavish venture through Scotland in their cozy camper van is everything we never knew we wanted. And this first episode proves just that as we get to witness through their eyes just how grand Scotland is.
Men in Kilts Season 1, Episode 1 recap: The food
The tour first begins in Edinburgh, specifically at a restaurant called The Kitchin. Their time at the restaurant has them in joyous tears with every single dish they try. Following The Kitchin, these Scottish men suited up in their best fishing wear and headed to one of Scotland’s ports in Pittenweem.
During their time out on the water, they capture loads of prawns (it was super gross, by the way) and then bring it back to shore and cook them with chef Tony Singh’s help. Mixing a few things here and there made Heughan feel confident they could have a cooking show, but I think that is up for interpretation.
Men in Kilts Season 1, Episode 1 recap: The drink
The last stop on the tour took Heughan and McTavish to a small island on the western coast of Scotland–Islay. We learn a great deal about Scotland’s distilleries and how the Scots love their whiskey. But perhaps the most entertaining part of it all was watching Heughan and McTavish roll around in a room full of barley, living their best life. Honestly, it was pretty darn cute.
Their tour closed out appropriately with them trying a 25-year-old whiskey—a pretty solid end to an episode all about food and drink involving these two Scottish BFFs. I can’t wait to see what next week holds!
We canna believe how wonderful this show is!
