2. A Black Lady Sketch Show Season 2
Like the bulk of shows on this list, HBO has yet to announce the official premiere date for either A Black Lady Sketch Show or Betty. I just wanted to get that out of the way first before delving into more information on the two highly-anticipated upcoming HBO shows!
As the title suggests, A Black Lady Sketch Show is a hilarious sketch comedy series starring Robin Thede, Ashley Nicole Black, Gabrielle Dennis and Quinta Brunson. The first season also featured a variety of amazing guest stars like Laverne Cox, Issa Rae and Angela Basset. Things might be slightly different in Season 2 as former writers and executive producers Amber Ruffin and Brittani Nichols did not write for the sophomore season as they did for Season 1.
Both women have been busy with their own shows, so they opened the writing room to some fresh new talent. According to Deadline, show creator Robin Thede added three new writers to the series, including “Kindsey Young, who worked on Insecure; Kristin Tucker, who worked on a Dog with a Blog; and UCB alum Shenovia Large, who moved to the West Coast to write on the show.”
1. Betty Season 2
Betty is one of HBO’s few teen comedy shows, based on Moselle’s 2018 film Skate Kitchen. Most of the film’s cast returned for the show, which focuses on an all-girl group’s efforts to stand out against a backdrop of predominantly male skaters in New York.
The first six-episode season was a breakout hit for HBO, receiving several award nominations and positive critical reception. The show was quickly renewed for a second season. Although we don’t have much information to share on the sophomore season, Betty Season 2 was included on the slate of upcoming HBO shows for 2021.
