Golden Globes 2021: John Boyega wins Best Supporting Actor for Small Axe
By Mads Lennon
John Boyega has won the award for the anthology drama series Small Axe! Boyega picked up the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series Drama. John Boyega starred in the episode titled “Red, White and Blue.”
Boyega’s win comes as something of a surprise as Brendan Gleeson was the favorite to win the Best Supporting Actor role for the night in that particular category. That said, it’s definitely a pleasant surprise as Boyega is a stellar actor and the Globes have received their fair share of criticism (rightfully so) for their lack of inclusion and diversity.
Red, White and Blue is a historical drama film directed by Steve McQueen. In it, Boyega portrayed the role of Leroy Logan, a London Metropolitan Police Officer who founds the Black Police Association and tries to reform the system from within.
As part of the Small Axe series created by BBC One, Small Axe became available on Amazon Prime Video at the beginning of December. This particular chapter also served as the opening film for the 58th New York Film Festival.
John Boyega surprised by winning the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series for Small Axe.
Some people were dismayed that Boyega won as they were hoping to see yet another Schitt’s Creek after the series swept at the Primetime Emmy Awards, but now that Dan Levy lost to Boyega, that won’t be the case. Regardless, Boyega’s win is a terrific one for the actor who certainly deserved it not only for his fantastic work in the show but as a performer in general.
