Why didn’t the 2021 Golden Globes have an In Memoriam segment?

In the year between the 2020 and 2021 Golden Globes ceremonies, we’ve lost several stars who have shaped the worlds of television and movies in unimaginable ways. Stars such as Kelly Preston, Olivia de Havilland, Christopher Plummer, Sean Connery, and Chadwick Boseman are just a few of the many stars we’ve lost in the year since the 2020 Golden Globes.

It’s perhaps for this reason, that many tuning into the Golden Globes on Sunday night expected the Hollywood Foreign Press to honor the many late actors, actresses, and members of the film and television community we’ve lost in the past year during the 2021 Golden Globes telecast.

Unfortunately, no In Memoriam segment was featured during the 3-plus hour telecast much to the surprise and displeasure of the viewers at home. Given the number of beloved stars we’ve lost, the lack of a tribute to those we’ve lost was definitely quite jarring; however, it was far from unusual for the Golden Globes.

Why was there no In Memoriam segment during the 2021 Golden Globes?

While the In Memoriam segment has become a staple at most prestigious awards including the Oscars, Emmys and Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Golden Globes ceased the inclusion of any form of In Memoriam segment in recent years. Instead of including a tribute to late members of the film and television community in recent years, the Hollywood Foreign Press honors late members of the community via an In Memoriam section on its official site.

As for why the Globes have opted out of airing an In Memoriam segment, producer Barry Adelman told PEOPLE in 2017 (h/t Entertainment Weekly) the Globes cut the segment because it’s been “handled really well” by the likes of the Oscars and SAG Awards.

Do you think it’s time the Golden Globes reconsider their approach to featuring an In Memoriam segment during its annual telecast? Would you have liked to see a tribute to those we lost in the last year even if just a brief one?
