6. Demelza Poldark from Poldark

Portrayed by Eleanor Tomlinson, Demelza Poldark is the leading lady of the hit Masterpiece series Poldark and one of the network’s most iconic female characters, based on the book series of the same name by Winston Graham. Demelza and leading character Ross Poldark knew each other since they were young but were from entirely different social classes.

When they were eventually married, it shocked everyone because of Demelza’s job as a scullery maid. Yet she nonetheless became the Mistress of Nampara, albeit having to navigate many struggles and challenges during the process as the newfound position of power came with its own frustrations.

Of her character and her relationship with Ross, Tomlinson has said, “Ross and Demelza’s relationship is a very modern one, and I believe that is why people have loved them as a couple because they are relatable. Their lives aren’t perfect, Ross has cheated, as has Demelza, there is dishonesty in the relationship but there is also a lot of love and passion.”

That fiery passion between them, along with the many conflicts, are what fans found most attractive about the couple. Sure it would be easy to root for a pair who was seemingly perfect for each other, but it’s more fun to see a story unfold between a troubled pair who feel realistic and often relatable.
