A Million Little Things Season 3, Episode 6 recap: Miles Apart
By Ariba Bhuvad
A Million Little Things Season 3 is already breaking our hearts, putting the pieces back together again, only to break them apart again. But it is perhaps what makes this show so beautiful in its own right, and sets it apart from dramas just like it.
In this week’s episode of A Million Little Things Season 3, “Miles Apart”, the series tackles Maggie’s (Allison Miller) decision to have an abortion, Gary’s (James Roday Rodriguez) to support her, and the impact it has on Darcy (Floriana Lima). Much like many other shows, A Million Little Things is tackling the COVID-19 pandemic and incorporating it into its storyline. Luckily, it’s not as depressing and difficult to watch as Grey’s Anatomy, but it’s still a harsh reminder of the year we’ve had.
As we all so vividly remember, all businesses were impacted by the lockdown, and this week’s episode shows Regina (Christina Moses) trying to figure out how to keep the restaurant afloat. Rome (Romany Malco) does his best to help out given his movie was shut down entirely because of the lockdown. I genuinely appreciate that the series didn’t write a depressing storyline for Rome which would have been easy to do. Instead, they show him picking himself up and doing what he can to get through this moment instead of dwelling on it.
And then we have Eddie (David Giuntoli) who is a hot mess lately, and our hearts truly go out to him. Following his unfortunate accident, he’s been wheelchair-ridden, and his dependency on pain meds is slowly increasing. This is going to spell disaster for his home life, but as we saw in this week’s episode, he’s certainly hitting rock bottom.
A Million Little Things Season 3, Episode 6: Gary lends a helping hand
Maggie and Gary may no longer be together, but the love they share has never quite subsided. It’s clear how much Gary has and always will care for her, and if you didn’t believe that already, this week proves it by ten-fold.
Gary is quick to notice that Maggie doesn’t drink any alcohol at their friend’s dinner, and has no qualms about asking her if she’s pregnant. Of course, he didn’t anticipate learning that she actually is, and is even more surprised to learn that the baby’s father is Maggie’s roommate, Jamie (Chris Greer).
Whether or not Maggie wanted to keep the baby didn’t quite matter because there’s always a chance her cancer can come back. Not wanting to put the baby at risk, she decides that she is going to have an abortion because it’s not worth the risk so soon after stopping the chemotherapy.
She calls Jamie with the news, and as expected, he’s very supportive of her decision, but regrets that he can’t be there with her. I am honestly stanning this couple and I really, really hope that they work out. I love her with Gary, but given he’s with Darcy, it only makes sense for her to move on.
But with that said, I love how much Gary is there for Maggie during the whole ordeal by being at her appointment where she’s given the instructions on how to take the abortion pills to making sure she wouldn’t be alone while he was out of town on a camping trip with Darcy and her son (whom he was going to be officially meeting as Darcy’s boyfriend).
The plan was to have Regina over with Maggie while she dealt with taking the pills and the side effects it brought on. But with all the chaos at the restaurant, Regina tells her she can’t make it, but to prevent Gary from staying back, Maggie lies and tells him Regina is coming anyway.
Of course, Gary learns about the lie and tells Darcy he has to stay back to be there for Maggie. It’s not exactly the best time to do something like that, and as it turns out, he didn’t have to do it at all because Jamie shows up all the way from London to be there for Maggie. Seriously, how does Maggie get all these great, supportive men in her life?!
Gary happens to see Jamie’s reunion with Maggie, and decides to give his attention to Darcy and presents her and her son with a grand gesture of a toboggan, something her son really wanted for their trip. He doesn’t show up to the trip as he didn’t feel it was the right way to meet her son, but it seems like he’s more than made up for not being there in the first place.
A Million Little Things Season 3, Episode 6: Delivery orders only
Due to the lockdown, Regina’s restaurant is only operating at half capacity but out of fear, no one is really coming in anyway. So instead, with the staff that is willing to come in, they start doing deliveries to all their usual clients.
Rome attempts to help Regina out, but it’s off to a rather disastrous start. I don’t blame the guy for accidentally putting in green tomatoes with red sauce, I didn’t know that was the case either. His mess-ups get a teensy bit worse when a teenager comes in selling candy bars and Rome refuses to buy them from him. So, while Rome isn’t looking, the boy takes all the delivery bags from the table and leaves.
The presumption is that he stole all the bags, but in reality, the kid actually delivered all the food for them. His reasoning for doing this? To get a job. Unfortunately, things are tight with the lockdown so Regina can’t give him a job but she does offer him a nice, warm meal–and Rome hands him $100 for his box of candy bars.
It’s the little things that matter!
A Million Little Things Season 3, Episode 6: Eddie’s downfall begins
Eddie is really struggling to keep things together. He’s in a lot of pain, and after throwing away the pills he had, he resorted to stealing medication from Rome and Regina. And now that he is out of those, he suddenly thought of Dakota (Anna Akana), who he once helped through a drug addiction problem of her own.
Unfortunately, his reason for reaching out isn’t to check up on her, but to see if she just might have some drugs for him. It’s pretty messed up, and it doesn’t take long for Dakota to put things together, and figure out why Eddie was so eager to help her with her music again.
Throughout her entire recording, Eddie is completely losing it, and while he provides some great advice, he is in a sweaty frenzy. By the end of the entire ordeal, he demands that Dakota take him home after she tries to confront him.
I’m not in total agreement with what happens after, but I guess it makes it for good drama. Dakota drops by the next morning and hands Eddie a bottle of pain meds, and he proceeds to pop two pills right then and there.
This isn’t going to end well for him, and given that he was just getting things together prior to his accident, my heart breaks for what it will mean for his family. Sigh.
That’s it for this week’s episode recap! See ya next week!
