Black Mirror Season 6 is not coming to Netflix in April 2021

Black Mirror established a significant fan base and almost unanimous critical acclaim when it first premiered in 2011. But since Season 5 dropped in 2019, there’s been no news about Black Mirror Season 6.
Will Black Mirror Season 6 happen? When will the dystopian science fiction series return to Netflix? It’s not clear yet, but we do know that Black Mirror Season 6 will not be available to watch on Netflix in April 2021.
One of the biggest setbacks for the series is the catastrophic year we had in 2020. The pandemic and a charged election created chaos and discord across the world.
Understandably, series creator Charlie Booker admitted that he was holding off on another season for the time being because the world was already so “bleak” he preferred to put his energy into more lighthearted content.
Netflix also hasn’t officially renewed the series for another season, but they also haven’t canceled it yet either. Right now, everything surrounding Black Mirror Season 6 is very much up in the air.
Black Mirror Season 6 release date
If Black Mirror does get a commission for more episodes, it’s not likely that we’ll see them premiere anytime soon. I would imagine that the earliest we would see a new season would be late 2022 or even early 2023.
There is another potential behind the scenes problem that might be holding up production on a new season of the sci-fi show. Per Screen Rant, Charlie Booker and co-showrunner Annabel Jones have produced the series through their company House of Tomorrow, which is part of Endemol Shine. But in January 2020, Booker and Jones exited House of Tomorrow in pursuit of a separate deal with Netflix.
The problem is, Endemol Shine still owns the rights to the series and they were recently purchased by the Banijay Group. The group is open to continuing the deal with Netflix for more seasons of Black Mirror, but as the publication points out, “for Brooker and Jones to continue to serve as showrunners for Black Mirror now that they no longer have direct control over the property, Netflix would need to work out a deal with their new Broke and Bones company, then make another deal to license the Black Mirror IP from Banijay, and that isn’t expected to come cheap.”
The other option is for Netflix to negotiate a deal to buy the rights to Black Mirror, but Banijay probably doesn’t want to lose out on such a big asset. In short, there are a lot of kinks to be ironed out on the contractual side for another season to happen.
