Gaslit cast shake-up: Armie Hammer is out, Dan Stevens is in

There has been a significant cast shake-up in the upcoming Julia Roberts-led drama Gaslit in development at Starz. Armie Hammer was previously cast in Gaslit, but the actor, who has since been plagued by controversy and sexual misconduct and assault allegations, has been replaced by Legion star and Downton Abbey alum Dan Stevens.
Stevens will join Roberts, and Sean Penn in the Watergate series based on Slate’s Watergate-themed podcast Slow Burn reports TVLine.
Per the outlet, the series has been described as “a modern take on Watergate that focuses on the untold stories and forgotten characters of the scandal — from Nixon’s bumbling, opportunistic subordinates, to the deranged zealots aiding and abetting their crimes, to the tragic whistleblowers who would eventually bring the whole rotten enterprise crashing down.”
Hammer was originally cast to portray John Dean, a young White House Counsel member who must decide if he can risk his career to lie for the President. Roberts and Penn will play husband and wife Martha Mitchell and Attorney General John Mitchell. Production on Gaslit is set to start this spring. The series does not yet have a premiere date.
Why did Dan Stevens take over for Armie Hammer?
This is far from the first project that Hammer has been dropped from as of late. Hammer stepped down from the leading role in the Jennifer Lopez film Shotgun Wedding shortly after the allegations against him initially surfaced and also dropped out of a role in the Paramount+ series The Offer and the film Billion Dollar Spy.
He has also been dropped by his talent agency WME, and it has been reported that his publicist is no longer working with him. Additionally, reports indicate that Disney is struggling to decide what to do with their Agatha Christie adaption Death on the Nile, which Hammer stars.
Variety confirmed that Hammer was being investigated by the LAPD, although his legal team denies the allegations made against him.
