A Million Little Things Season 3, Episode 9 recap: The Lost Sheep
By Ariba Bhuvad
A Million Little Things Season 3 gives us an emotional whirlwind of an episode this week that I’m still reeling from it. Week after week, we’re accustomed to the emotional turmoil it stirs up within us, but this week feels different, it feels more real–if that makes sense.
Eddie (David Giuntoli) decides to head back to rehab, but having to face the reality of the situation is worse than anything he could ever imagine. Understandably, Katherine (Grace Park) is at her wit’s end with Eddie’s addiction problem and this week’s episode unravels just how frustrated she is.
Regina (Christina Moses) and Rome (Romany Malco) continue to help Tyrell (Adam Swain) out as he waits to hear from his mother. They even get one of Katherine’s employees, Alan’s (Terry Chen), help since he does pro bono immigration work. Week after week we learn just how amazing Regina and Rome are, and I must say their story is one of my favorites from the series.
Maggie (Allison Miller) and Jamie finally make a decision on what and who they are, and it’s rather heartbreaking to watch (more on that in a bit). And last but not least, Gary (James Roday Rodriguez) finds himself in a rather awkward situation with Delilah’s kids, mainly Sophie (Lizzy Greene).
A lot went down during this week’s episode of A Million Little Things Season 3, so without further ado, let’s get right into it.
A Million Little Things Season 3, Episode 9: Katherine needs a permanent vacation
If there is anyone that deserves to get away for a while, if not permanently, it’s Katherine. Time and time again, she’s stuck by Eddie’s side through every curveball he’s thrown at her. Whether it was cheating on her with Delilah (and having a kid with her) or his on and off again addiction issues, she’s certainly reached her limit.
I’m glad they chose to hone in on that in this episode because realistically someone can only hang on for so long. And after everything she’s been through, it’s only fair that someone cuts her a break. As Eddie heads off to rehab, she tells him that he has to tell Theo (Tristan Byon) before he goes. He’s not too eager to, but he lays it all out for Theo, who is quick to empathize with him, and even quicker to blame Katherine for all of it. He feels that her returning to work caused Eddie to do this.
With another thing on her conscience, Katherine storms out of the house after getting annoyed with her mother who comes to help her out with Theo. In her state of frustration and eventually inebriation, she even tries to kiss Alan, who luckily does not take advantage of the situation.
Again, I’m not sure I can blame the woman for feeling this way. It’s been a rough few years, and it’s only going to get tougher with Eddie in rehab. The trust is essentially gone, and even though Eddie is trying to work through his issues in group therapy, Katherine is certainly not ready to forgive or accept him back.
I’m glad that during therapy, it was pointed out to Eddie that he is making this all about him, and he needs to focus on making sure Theo feels safe. And on that note, he should probably apologize to Gary for imploding on him when he thought Gary was trying to tell Katherine to leave him. I mean, all he said was he gets it and offered his support!
A Million Little Things Season 3, Episode 9: A mother’s love
Rome and his father celebrate his mother’s birthday in this week’s episode, and it starts off a bit rough and ends a bit rough too. While his father believes that Rome’s mom is watching over him and leaving little signs around that she is, Rome is not so easily convinced. They’re butting heads throughout the entire episode over this, but have one beautiful moment when they light a candle in her honor.
But when his father brings up the topic of his mom in heaven and watching over him, Rome tells him he doesn’t have to believe just because his father does. He doesn’t think that his father finding pennies in the wash is his mother leaving it behind for him to find because of their song. But something tells me Rome’s perspective may begin to shift in the near future.
Tyrell’s mother’s case is more complicated than we thought after he reveals that she used his dead father’s social security number to get a job. Alan isn’t sure how much that is going to go against her, but here’s to hoping he figures something out.
My heart broke for Tyrell when he missed a call from his mother and it broke even more when Regina brought him a FitBit type of device so he can make sure he never misses a call from his mother again. Why are these guys so nice?!
A Million Little Things Season 3, Episode 9: Bye, Jamie
We bid farewell to our dear English friend, Jamie, during this week’s episode, and it’s just as devastating as I anticipated. After joining Maggie at her 6-month checkup (all is clear!) and subsequently snagging a date with the nurse, Jamie realizes he can’t stick around anymore.
First things first, even though Maggie’s scans are clear, her doctor doesn’t want her traveling given that she’s high-risk and needs to ensure she is as safe as possible. So she has to stay back in the U.S., and Jamie probably could have too if it wasn’t for one thing–the both of them falling for each other.
When Jamie went on the date, Maggie was jealous, and while Jamie was on the date, he couldn’t stop thinking of Maggie. Normally, there’d be nothing wrong with that, except, that this wasn’t the direction they wanted for their relationship. Maggie is just starting to grow from the last year or two she’s had, and knowing that everyone needs their time to grow, Jamie wants to let her do that without him getting in the way.
It’s a beautiful gesture but a painful goodbye–I sure hope we see Jamie Poppins again!
A Million Little Things Season 3, Episode 9: Sophie goes M.I.A.
After being out all day, Gary returns to Delilah’s house to find that Sophie has snuck out despite him telling both her and Danny (Chance Hurstfield) not to during the lockdown. So with Danny’s help, they log onto her iPad and check her recent texts to see where she might be.
Based on the texts, Gary believes that she is with her boyfriend, Jake, but when he gets there he learns that Sophie broke up with him weeks ago–and that she put Jake’s name with someone else’s phone number in her phone. Uh, so where is Sophie and who has she been texting all this time?
Well, when Gary calls the phone number from the texts, Sophie’s guitar teacher, Peter (Andrew Leeds) picks up the phone. Well, that’s not good (and it really isn’t based on next week’s promo!).
That’s it for this week’s episode recap! See ya next week!
