A Million Little Things Season 3 tackles the heartbreaking and jarring reality of sexual assault. Please be advised that this episode focused on a character’s traumatic experience with sexual assault, and if you may be triggered by it, please read ahead at your own discretion.

It’s always numbing to watch an episode talk about a topic as sensitive as this, and it hurts, even more, when it’s about a young character. During last week’s episode, we learned that Sophie (Lizzy Greene) had a strange relationship with her music teacher, Peter (Andrew Leeds), and based on the promo for this week’s episode, we knew it was leading to something that wouldn’t be comfortable to watch or hear about.

Gary (James Roday Rodriguez) came to know something wasn’t right when he learned that Sophie had been lying about seeing her boyfriend, whom she had broken up with. Instead, she had been sneaking away to see her music teacher, but why it had to be a secret was the disturbing part.

Sophie doesn’t reveal the entirety of her situation to Gary, and gets defensive after he tries to prod more into her statement of “I messed up”. She completely shuts down, and so Gary brings in the only person he trusts to help Sophie talk about whatever has happened–Maggie (Allison Miller), who brings along Regina (Christina Moses).

Let’s get into this week’s recap of A Million Little Things Season 3, Episode 10! And please remember that this episode contains sensitive topics such as sexual assault, so proceed at your own discretion.

A Million Little Things Season 3, Episode 10: Sophie’s devastating truth

Once Maggie shows up, she’s able to get Sophie to open up a bit more about what happened with Peter. Up until now, Gary (and the viewers) know that Peter had asked Sophie to wear a bathing suit or anything that would make her uncomfortable so as to open her up while she performs. The thought was that if she breaks out of her comfort zone, then she could fight away the nerves.

When she eventually does come out in her bathing suit, Peter films her while she sings and plays the guitar, and then gets her to dance around with him as he continues to record. Unfortunately, there’s more to the story that explains why Sophie was sending Peter pictures of her in a bra and underwear.

Sophie reveals to Maggie and Regina that after the first experience (which she was trying to defend Peter over), she went to visit Peter after she got her audition. And at first, he was genuinely happy and supporting her, but the situation got weird when he exposed himself in front of her and began to touch himself. And after he was done, he just wished her well and acted like he did nothing out of the ordinary.

The whole experience shook up and confused Sophie who just wanted things to stay as normal as they could, and so worried about her future and audition, she thought sending him pictures would be the best way to normalize the situation.

A Million Little Things Season 3, Episode 10: Sophie’s amazing support system

It was no fault to Sophie for not understanding what was happening, or even being able to process it later. She had been assaulted by a man much older than her, and in her confusion, she did what she thought was right. It’s heartbreaking and gutwrenching to see the fear in her face, but it filled me with pride and joy to see her band of moms and dads come to her support in her time of need.

Since Delilah (Stephanie Szostak) has been gone, everyone else is stepping in, and given how delicate this entire situation is, it helps to have this sort of support there. Of course, Gary is beyond angry and livid with the music teacher and even shows up at his house to take out his rage. But the sight of Peter’s wife stops him from doing something that could potentially hurt Sophie more.

And this is extremely important because Peter messaged Sophie back after she sent the picture of her and basically played dumb to his previous behavior. He told her that the pictures she sent were inappropriate and that he couldn’t be her teacher anymore.

Basically, he wanted to cover his tracks and make sure that there was no paper trail or proof of his perverted actions towards her. Ugh, this guy makes my blood boil, and it broke my heart to see Sophie’s reaction upon getting that text.

She has an extremely long road ahead of her and she’ll need all the help she can get. Luckily, with Regina by her side, she worked up the courage to call Delilah and tell her what happened. I’m hoping this means Delilah will try her best to get home and be there for Sophie. Given the pandemic is going on, and she got stuck in Europe because her father got hurt during their trip, it’s tough to say if she actually will. But Sophie needs, it, and we need to see Sophie get through this unscathed.

A Million Little Things Season 3 has been courageous and brave with the content they’ve given us this season, and I commend them for doing it. It’s not easy to talk about topics like this, but it’s important now more than ever, and I appreciate them shedding light on a topic that gets ignored all too often.
