In the previous episode of Cruel Summer, we find out that Jeanette may not be who we think she is. Did she have it in her to leave Kate behind?

We have moved forward to July 15, 1993, 1994, and 1995.

We start in 1993. Kate’s father and his daughter, Ashley are going over gun safety in a garage and Kate walks in.

We jump to 1994, Kate is walking around her house. She is having flashbacks to being locked in the basement.

Cruel Summer Season 1 Episode 4: What really happened to Kate?

Kate is sitting at her dining room table when Ashley walks in. She is there to talk to Kate.

We flash forward again to 1995. They are with attorneys going over the lawsuit. Kate wants to be prepared when going up against Jeanette.

It is 1994 again. Kate and Jamie are together. He is dropping her off at therapy.

Kate is talking to her therapist, Sylvia, about feeling safe and how she used to feel safe in her bedroom. They are going to work together to process her trauma, but Kate thinks that she will never see things “normally” again.

We are back in 1995. Kate is being questioned by her attorneys as if she was on the witness stand. She is saying that Jeanette saw Kate as she was running away from the house.

Kate is also asked about the day she was rescued, but she has nothing to say about it.

We then see Kate hanging out with Mallory and they are smoking her mom’s stash.

We jump back to 1993. Kate, Ashley, and their father are about to go hunting. Her dad mentions that her mom, Joy, is talking to Scott. She then arrives and they all leave.

In 1995, Mallory and Kate are eating snacks when Joy comes in and hands Kate a piece of paper that was taped to the front door that just says “liar.”

In 1993, Jamie has met up with Kate and the family on their hunting trip. In fact, there are many families there.

In a turn of events, Joy has also invited Mr. Harris to the hunting trip. Things are about to get very interesting.

Cruel Summer Season 1 Episode 4: How did Kate and Mallory become friends?

Leaving therapy, in 1994, Kate runs into Mallory in the waiting room. She is also there to see the therapist, Sylvia. They both decide to not mention either of them being there to anyone else.

They exchange why they both go to therapy and this is where their friendship begins.

Kate then tells Mallory that she saw Jeanette kissing Jamie the other night.

In 1995, Mallory and Kate are talking to Joy. They are trying to figure out who put the note on the door.

Joy wants the girls to go on the annual hunting trip to get the town on Kate’s side.

On the trip, Mallory and Kate decide they don’t want to hunt. Joy starts mentioning to the others on the trip that they might need to testify. They seem reluctant.

We keep flashing back to 1993. It is a different story here. Kate is into the shooting and is talking to Mr. Harris about it.

Kate and Ashley are talking on the patio. Kate mentions that her father may be having an affair. Ashley then thinks that maybe it’s Joy that is having the affair. The girls leave on bad terms.

In 1994, Kate is back at Sylvia’s. She is talking about seeing Mr. Harris in her dreams. Then she starting talking about what it was like to be in his basement.

She says, in the beginning, they had to learn their parts. What he was going to do and how she was going to react. At first, Kate tried to escape which only made matters much worse.

In 1994, Joy got a call from police officers. They have news about the case. Kate thinks that they have Jeanette’s fingerprints on the necklace.

In 1993, Jeanette leaves her cabin on the hunting trip at night and runs into Mr. Harris.

In 1995, Joy leaves her cabin in the middle of the night and goes to see Mallory. She thinks Mallory put the sign on the front door.

At the police station, Kate and Joy are sitting in the interrogation room when they are told that they aren’t going to charge Jeanette. The fingerprint was inconclusive. Joy is not happy about this.

Cruel Summer Season 1 Episode 4: Why Kate?

After Kate gets home, she sees Ashley on her computer. Ashley now wants to reconcile. Kate tells her that after their argument on the porch in 1993, that she ran into Mr. Harris outside.

We go back to 1993 and see Kate and Mr. Harris talking. They are looking at the stars. Kate is cold and he offers her a sweater.

She mentions that there is a lot going on in her family. He asks to talk about it, but she doesn’t want to. Mr. Harris then opens up and says that something traumatic happened to his family when he was in high school.

He says that his dad committed suicide. Right before he died, he had a fight with his father and now that is what he has to remember as their last conversation.

Back in 1994, Ashley and Kate finish their conversation. Kate tells Ashley again that she isn’t her real sister.

Kate types into an online forum. Will we ever learn who is on the other side?

We see flashes of Kate in captivity. It is Mr. Harris saying that something will be over soon. What is it?

In 1993, it is the next morning. They are all eating breakfast. Jamie mentioned that Kate wasn’t in her bed the night before, but Kate just says she went for a walk.

In 1995, Mallory and Kate are walking away from the cabin, at night, and are trying to narrow down the list of people that could have posted the “liar” note.

Mallory mentions that Joy accused her of writing the note. The girls then walk over to the campfire where everyone is. Kate says that she going to tell them a ghost story.

She starts the story by mimicking their lives and telling the story of her abduction.

In 1994, Derek meets up with Ashley at the park. They are both talking about what is going on with their families. Derek says that Jeanette was cleared. Ashley is sad that Kate is shutting her out.

Ashley starts talking about how she wants to talk to kate. We then see that the person on the other end of Kate’s chat is Ashley.

We go back to 1993. Kate had been knocked out by Mr. Harris and when she wakes up she has all the basic necessities, but also bars have been put on the windows.

In 1995, Kate and Mallory are preparing for court. Kate wants to listen to her own therapy tapes, but Mallory doesn’t think it is a good idea. Kate does it anyway.

We hear Kate say in therapy that right before she was rescued he came downstairs and that is when she met “Annabell.” But who is Annabell? Kate can’t remember.
