Shrill Season 3, Episode 1 recap: Fran & Emily take their relationship to the next level.

Fran and Emily got together at the end of Season 2, and they start Shrill Season 3 in what appears to be a full-fledged relationship. The first time we see them this season, they’re busy making love in bed when Fran, regrettably, tells Emily she has to prepare for her first client of the day. That client turns out to be a young white woman named Sienna, who brings in a picture of Bob Marley for reference. I’m sure you know where we’re going with this.

Yes, Sienna wants Fran to dread her hair, which Fran is really not keen on doing. She tries to explain the concept of cultural appropriation, “If I were to wear my hair in dreadlocks and I went into work, say, in an office, I would get told to wear my hair straight to look more professional.”

Sienna’s only response is, “That would be really cute.” So Fran decides it’s not a good idea to do this and kicks Sienna out, who is totally confused as to why. “I tried to explain but you wouldn’t listen.” Emily comes into assist, scooting her out of her chair, “It’s not personal, we just hate you here.”

Annie arrives at the tail-end of this confrontation with her leftover ribs in tow, which is healing for Fran, who would rather eat meat and gossip than relive her bad day at work. From there, we get the fantastic scene between Fran, Emily and Annie where Annie divulges her terrible night and coffee date with Nick. Hence the “tasting pot” and “low-cooking” advice!
