Things are not looking good for Nathan Rutherford in Rutherford Falls Season 1, Episode 9. This week’s episode, “Stoodis” picks up with a blast from the past as we see a much younger Nathan and Reagan preparing for Reagan’s wedding that never was to Ray. Back then, Nathan gave her some valuable advice about accepting a full ride to Northwestern University if it meant not getting married to Ray, which we know she eventually doesn’t do.

Fast-forward back to the present and we pick up right where the last episode left off, with Nathan telling Terry to shove his “fair and honest deal” where the sun don’t shine. It’s not looking good for this deal. Even after Nathan storms out, Reagan warns Terry that Nathan knows how to be a thorn in your side when he wants to be. He’s the kind of guy who will find someone to complain to even if you don’t have a supervisor.

Terry takes note of that, but he has something better to share with Reagan, plans for her new cultural center! She’s getting her own, two-story building outside of the casino with plenty of room for Minishonka heritage to be celebrated.

Rutherford Falls Season 1, Episode 9 recap: Reagan & Josh make a shocking discovery.

The news makes Reagan realize that she’ll need to go back to Nathan’s great-aunt Joan’s and get those items back. Terry gives her a budget of $20,000. Bringing Josh along for the ride because his hotness softens people, Reagan manages to get the lot for $15,000.

While rooting through the items, Josh comes across a fascinating stack of letters from Nathan’s mom and some guy that is not a Rutherford. Reading through the pages, he makes the shocking discovery that Nathan is not actually a Rutherford. His mom had an affair.

Knowing that the news will break Nathan’s heart, Reagan tells Josh that she has to figure out the right way to tell him. But Josh has other plans. These letters tie together a great story filled with romance, secrets and political intrigue. It would be crazy for him to not tell this story. Of course, Reagan can’t be with someone who would write a story that would hurt her lifelong best friend so badly. For now, their romance is over.

Rutherford Falls Season 1, Episode 9 recap: Nathan finds out the truth about his heritage.

And speaking of hurting her best friend, Reagan goes to Nathan’s armed with P.F. Changs to break the bad news to him. He doesn’t take it well.

While Reagan was out getting her tribe’s items back from Joan, Nathan spent the day with Bobbie. Bobbie encouraged Nathan to consider taking the deal so he went to hear Terry out.

It turns out the stipulations for him to keep his museum would involve him restructuring the museum and appealing to the “historical items” people recognize, like a typical hokey Quaker Oats guy-style outfit and butter churning. It’s soulless and fake history. Nathan is really not happy about his new role and he lashes out at Bobbie in response.

So when Reagan shows up, while they both agree its been the worst week ever, things get sufficiently worse for Nathan when she drops that bombshell about his family. And Josh verified the details with Nathan’s brother. When Nathan goes to visit his brother, he confirms that everything is true. Nathan isn’t a Rutherford.

After that, Nathan goes on a fast downward spiral. He calls Bobbie to tell him that he’s closing the museum forever and then he tries to take down the statue of Big Larry himself by tying it to his car bumper. All that he achieves is ripping his bumper off. But surely this isn’t the end of everything Nathan has worked for his whole life, right!?
