Cruel Summer Season 1, Episode 6 Recap: An Ocean Inside Me

In the previous episode of Cruel Summer, we saw that Jeanette had an interest in getting closer to Kate and that Mr. Harris started grooming Kate early on. But still, who is Annabelle?

This episode takes place on August 15, 1993, 1994, and 1995.

In 1993, Jeanette and Derek are preparing an anniversary breakfast for their parents.

In 1994, Jeanette and Derek are also preparing breakfast for their parents. Only their parents are fighting in the background. Derek is about to move out to college and Jeanette doesn’t want him to leave.

A gift basket shows up at the house at the front door. Cindy thinks Greg sent it for her, but Angela really sent it to Greg.

It is now 1995, Jeanette is watching home videos when Angela walks in. She says that she misses her dad. Angela thinks it’s her fault, but Jeanette blames Greg for being distant. Jeanette then feels like it is all her fault that everything has fallen apart. Angela tries to tell her otherwise.

The lawyer shows up at Jeanette’s door with a problem. What could it be?

We go back to 1993. Mallory, Vince, and Jeanette are arriving at school. They are talking about sneaking into a scary movie, but on their “list,” stealing comes before sneaking in.

In 1995, the lawyer is talking to Jeanette about the character witnesses Kate has lined up. The lawyer is concerned that the witness, Mrs. Peterson, has something bad to say about Jeanette and wants to get to the bottom of it.

Cruel Summer Season 1, Episode 6: What is it about Jeanette’s character?

In 1993, Jeanette and Mallory are in a store taking off tags to steal some clothes. Mr. Harris is also at the store. Tanya Peterson is the one working. She is talking to Mr. Harris and asks him on a dinner date.

The girls race out of the store. Tanya asks if they need anything else but they walk out. They are walking out of the mall when the alarm starts to go off. Vince tried to steal a CD but got caught. Jeanette takes the CD and Vince runs away.

Jeanette is taken by mall security where she runs into Jamie. Jamie got busted jumping in the fountain.

In 1994, Cindy is sitting in the kitchen eating some of the food from the basket. The phone rings and it is someone prank calling them. They are mocking the family and Jeanette.

Cindy goes into Jeanette’s room and starts looking around. She opens Jeanette’s jewelry box and finds a key taped to the bottom of it. Where does this key go? Mr. Harris’s house?

In 1993, Jeanette is talking to Jamie about the “trouble” that she gets into. Then, Greg walks through the door.

In 1994, Cindy is chasing Jeanette around the house and asks to talk to her. Cindy asks if she has been to Mr. Harris’s house. Jeanette denies it.

In 1993, Greg and Jeanette are walking out of the mall and she tells him the whole story. Greg tells her not to tell her mother about what happened.

In 1994, Greg comes home from work and Cindy shows him the key that she found. Cindy is convinced that it’s Mr. Harris’s key, but Greg doesn’t want to hear it.

In 1995, Vince comes into Jeanette’s room. Jeanette says that she is going out and asks Vince to distract the reporters while she leaves. Where is she going?

In 1994, Derek is packing up for college and is grabbing some snacks. Cindy is cleaning dishes and tells Derek that she thinks Jeanette is lying and that Greg is covering. Derek doesn’t want to hear it and tells her to talk to someone else.

In 1995, Jeanette goes back to the mall and ends up talking to Mrs. Peterson.

In 1993, Jeanette is telling Vince about how she didn’t get in trouble for covering for him. She also starts to talk about Mallory and how they always have to do what she wants. Vince doesn’t want to talk about Mallory though.

In 1994, Vince is talking to Ben in the video store. Jeanette walks in, they stop talking, and Ben leaves. Jeanette now knows about Ben and Vince and she is happy for them.

In 1993, Jeanette is using her key to get into Mr. Harris’s house. She opens a closet and starts to look through his CDs. Mr. Harris comes home with Mrs. Peterson and Jeanette is stuck in the closet.

In 1994, Vince and Jeanette are still talking in the video store about how her mother is starting to believe the rumors. Kate’s friends walk in and they ignore Jeanette. Mrs. Peterson’s interview is on. She is saying that Mr. Harris was forceful on their date.

In 1993, we see Jeanette watching them on the couch and this is not the case. Mrs. Peterson is the one coming on strong. She goes as far as spilling wine on herself and taking her top off.

In 1994, Jeanette blurts out that Mrs. Peterson is lying and of course Kate’s friends do not take this lightly.

In 1995, Angela is heading to work and Jeanette and Vince are going to stay in and watch a movie.

In 1994, Jeanette is being picked up by her brother. She tells him that Kate’s friends no longer want to hang out with her.

In 1995, Mrs. Peterson is giving her testimony about Jeanette and the phone rings at the Turner house. We flashback to Jeanette talking to Mrs. Peterson at the mall. She blackmails Mrs. Peterson into not saying anything due to what she overheard in the closet at Mr. Harris’s house.

In 1995, Cindy walks into Angela’s bar and asks for a drink. She says it is or was her anniversary and she knows exactly who Angela is. She doesn’t want any trouble with Angela though.

Cindy is actually there to ask about Jeanette. She wants to know how she is doing. Angela says that Jeanette misses her. They talk more and Angela mentions that Cindy had left Greg and that’s why they are together. Cindy doesn’t seem to remember it this way.

Although in a flashback to 1994, Cindy says that she is going to spend some time at her sister’s and asks him to look into Jeanette and the key.

So, how did Angela and Greg happen?

In 1995, Cindy still has the key and is about to see if it opens Mr. Harris’s door. It does. Little does she know that Greg also tried it in 1994.
