9-1-1 Season 4 concluded its whirlwind season this week with a heavy heart but a hopeful future. During last week’s episode, the series gave us a panic attack after Eddie (Ryan Guzman) was shot. Whether or not he survived was a mystery we had to live with all week, and I’ll be the first to say, it was a difficult few days to get through.

But alas, Eddie manages to make it through the gunshot wound, but it comes with the realization that there is an angry ex-firefighter out there trying to hurt his former colleagues. As Eddie heals, the station and the LAFD try to figure out who is behind the shootings.

Buck (Oliver Stark) takes over the responsibility of taking care of Christopher (Gavin McHugh) and delivering the news that Eddie’s life is in danger. It’s a bittersweet episode to see how close the two actually are, and present Buck was when Christopher and Eddie needed it the most.

The 9-1-1 Season 4 finale ends on a somber note as Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) confesses to Chimney (Kenneth Choi) that she hasn’t been okay since giving birth. It seems to be postpartum depression, but the series doesn’t say that explicitly. But it is a story that will likely carry into the fifth season when the series returns this fall (is it fall yet?).

Now, without further ado, let’s talk about that epic and thrilling season 4 finale!

9-1-1 Season 4, Episode 14 recap: A firefighter scorned

Upon further investigation, the station learns that Eddie isn’t the only LAFD employee that was shot that day. As Eddie is rushed to the hospital, following closely behind is another firefighter shot by presumably the same sniper.

As the episode goes on, the LAFD discovers the bullet used in the shootings linked directly back to the police department, meaning it was one of their own that is responsible. In fact, it was a former LAFD SWAT member who was angry over things that had happened to him and blamed the department for it.

Thanks to Athena (Angela Bassett), the man is eventually apprehended after luring Bobby (Peter Krause) into a situation and attempting to kill him too. My heart was sinking for the better half of five minutes as Bobby’s future hung in the balance. But as always, Athena came through for everyone across the board and even saved her and Bobby’s marriage in the process.

9-1-1 Season 4, Episode 14 recap: Eddie’s decision

After surviving multiple near-death incidents, Eddie made a huge decision regarding Christopher’s future. More so than his family, he trusts Buck to take care of his own son if the situation ever arises where he is no longer around.

After the last time he nearly died, Eddie changed his will to give Buck custody of Christopher in the event of his death. Clearly, Buck is more than capable of taking care of Christopher, and as we saw in the season 4 finale, there is no one else he feels more comfortable with than Buck.

I love this best friend/family dynamic, and I’m here for it all the way!

9-1-1 Season 4, Episode 14 recap: Maddie asks for help

For a couple of weeks now, we’ve been seeing Maddie struggle with taking care of her and Chimney’s baby. There is a difference in her, and she seems to have difficulty grasping her new reality.

It seems as if she is struggling with postpartum depression but hasn’t conveyed to Chimney what’s going on. Luckily for her, Chimney is the type of guy that will be present for her whenever she needs, and it’s exactly what he does when she breaks down.

In the wake of how she’s been feeling, she quits her job at the 9-1-1 call center and decides it’s time to get help. And Chimney promises that whatever she needs to feel better, he’s with her 100% of the way. What a guy!

And that’s a wrap on 9-1-1 Season 4, folks! It’s been a crazy ride, and despite the pandemic delaying the season, we managed to get an entire season filled with more twists and turns than ever before. But now, we must wait until later this fall for the series to return, so until then, stay safe and have an amazing summer!
