Cruel Summer Season 1, Episode 8 Recap: Proof

In the previous episode of Cruel Summer, we found out that Kate went to Mr. Harris’s on her own. Does this really change anything?

This episode takes place on August 30, 1993, 1994, and 1995.

It is 1994. Greg is asking Jeanette about the number of times she has used the key to get into Mr. Harris’s house. She claims that she only went in once for the “list” of 1993.

Greg wants Jeanette to tell the cops about the hide and seek game.

Cruel Summer Season 1 Episode 8: Will Jeanette tell the police about Mr. Harris’s house?

We go back to 1993. Jeanette got her braces off and it is the first day of school.

Then to 1995. She is meeting with her attorney. She hands over the chatroom papers. The attorney says that this is contrary to Kate’s story, which means it will help them show that Kate isn’t always truthful.

In 1994, Jeanette and Vince are getting ready to go to school. They are talking about the Kate rumors and Jeanette wants to skip school. Vince tries to tell her that it will be old news soon.

Jamie and his friend Ben walk into school. This is Vince’s Ben, but no one knows. Vince and Jeanette also walk in. Jeanette instantly gets made fun of.

In 1993, Cindy is dropping Jeanette off at school. Jeanette still has Kate’s scrunchy. She keeps claiming that she wants to give it back, but she most likely won’t.

Mr. Harris meets them and tells them that it is going to be a great year.

In 1995, Cindy and Jeanette are at a restaurant. Cindy gives Jeanette a piece of jewelry that she got in Paris. Jeanette is less than pleased that her mom has been in Paris this whole time.

Cindy says that she went to Paris for work and that they can go together one time. Jeanette mentions her GED. Cindy gives her some not-so-wanted motherly advice. Jeanette speaks her mind.

Cindy leaves her with one thing. She wants her to drop the charges against Kate Wallis. She says that she doesn’t want Jeanette to have any regrets later on in life.

It is 1994. Kate’s friends are talking about how she is going to be on the talk show. Jeanette walks by and they yell at her.

We go back to 1995. Jeanette is leaving the restaurant. A reporter starts to follow her and take pictures of her. Jamie also sees her and runs up. He wants to talk, but she wants to get out of there. He asks Jeanette to meet him at his garage later.

Cruel Summer Season 1 Episode 8: Will Jeanette meet up with Jamie?

In 1993, Jeanette, Mallory, and Vince meet up at lunch. Mallory finished the list with some fake tape that she wants to swap out with something in the AV room.

Kate’s friends are talking at the same table and start mentioning that she isn’t in school.

In 1994, Jeanette storms out of the school. Vince goes after her. He wants to stand by her, but she doesn’t want him to get caught up in everything. Jamie watches this whole thing go down. Vince approaches him and tells him to back off. Jamie goes to his car and drinks by himself.

In 1993, Jeanette, Mallory, and Vince are about to go swap the tape. Jeanette doesn’t really want to do the prank anymore, but Mallory ropes her into it. Mallory goes into the AV room while Vince and Jeanette stand guard.

Ben walks up to Vince and Vince ends up going with him to talk. He leaves his post. Leaving only Jeanette.

Jamie is back at home. It is 1995. Jeanette meets him in his garage. Jamie says that he regrets punching her in the face. Jeanette asks who he believes and we are left waiting for an answer.

In 1994, Greg is on the phone with Cindy. He tells her about the key and why Jeanette had it. Jeanette ends up being behind him because she left school. He wants to take her to the police station to tell them about the key.

In 1993, Mallory is waiting to start the tape in the AV room. Kate’s mom walks through the halls and straight into Mr. Harris’s office and asks if he knows where Kate is. What is he going to say?

In 1995, Angela tells Greg that Cindy came to see her.

Cruel Summer Season 1 Episode 8: What is Mr. Harris’s story?

In 1993, Mr. Harris says that she is probably at lunch. He says that he hasn’t seen her yet and says that he is going to call the main office. They confirm that Kate is not at school.

Mrs. Wallis thinks that she ran away and Mr. Harris convinces her to not involve the police because it could be seen as negligence. Listening outside the office the entire time was Jeanette.

Jeanette leaves her post again and goes after Mrs. Wallis. She claims to be one of Kate’s friends and says that if she needed anything, she would be there.

Greg goes to a bar. The one that Angela works at. Mr. Wallis is there and stares down Greg.

We jump to 1995, Angela is asking him more about Jeanette and the key. Greg tells Angela that Jeanette did in fact turn the key over and explained the hide and seek game. This satisfied police.

Greg assures Angela that he loves her and that he doesn’t want Cindy.

In 1993, Mallory finally pushes play on their tape. Only Vince and Jeanette are gone, so Mr. Harris walks right in. He wants to know why she is there. Mallory says that she is playing a prank video.

On the tape is Mr. Harris leaving his house that morning. He gets freaked out and takes the tape.

Mallory is angry at Jeanette and Vince. Jeanette says that she and Mallory are growing apart. She doesn’t want to be pushed around by her anymore.

In 1994, Jamie is driving Ben to practice, after he was drinking. He was on his way to talk to Jeanette. But Ben realizes that Jamie is drunk and they get into an accident before he can get Jamie to pull over.

Jamie was arrested on the spot. Ben’s arm is wrecked and not looking good. Vince wants to go with Ben in the ambulance, but Ben says no.

In 1995, Jamie is telling this whole story to Jeanette. Jeanette asks why he has a tape recorder. But again, we get no answer from Jamie.

In 1993, Jamie goes up to Jeanette and says that she has a good smile without her braces. Jeanette then tells Jamie that Mrs. Wallis said Kate was missing. She wanted to tell him to warn him. Jamie quickly leaves.

Cruel Summer Season 1 Episode 8: What’s on the tape?

We go back to Jamie and Jeanette in 1995. The tape he has on the recorder is from his answering machine. He got in on Christmas Eve. He knows it is only sounds but he always thought it had something to do with Kate, so he held onto it.

Jeanette asks him to play it. It is the sound of an old movie and someone breathing. Jeanette immediately says that she needs to go.

She goes to Mallory’s. She asks for a snowglobe. Mallory claims to not have it, but she probably does.

Sure enough, she has it. But what does the snowglobe have to do with that sound?

Mr. Harris brings the tape into his office. He watches it back over and over again. Kate is in the video. He destroys the video.
