A Million Little Things Season 3, Episode 16 recap: No One Is To Blame
By Ariba Bhuvad
A Million Little Things Season 3 gives us an incredibly emotional episode as members of the group finds themselves at their wit’s end. Given the COVID-19 pandemic, things have been chaotic for everyone. Regina’s (Christine Moses) restaurant is being hit by a lack of customers, Rome (Romany Malco) has been dealing with the emotional repercussions of the Black Lives Matter movement, Eddie (David Giuntoli) and Katherine (Grace Park) are getting divorced, and Sophie (Lizzy Greene) is dealing with the trauma of her assault.
It’s been a difficult year for everyone, and as we inch closer to the end of the season, it’s clear that things may not get resolved before the season closes out. However, this week’s episode isn’t all gloom and doom. Sophie makes a lot of progress with the help of Rome, someone she can entrust more than anyone because he understands where she is coming from.
I was also happy to see Eddie get a win with Theo (Tristan Byon). Things have been so chaotic with their family, and while Eddie has made mistakes, he loves Theo beyond belief. Unfortunately, the cost of giving Eddie some happiness is coming at a great cost to Gary (James Roday Rodriguez). But more on that later.
Clearly, there is a lot to talk about when it comes to this week’s episode of A Million Little Things Season 3, so let’s get right into the major moments!
A Million Little Things Season 3, Episode 16 recap: Gary and Darcy
Gary has been an amazing friend to Eddie, especially this season with taking him to rehab and then having him move in so he can see Theo. But while he’s been a great friend, the entire situation isn’t suitable for his and Darcy’s (Floriana Lima) relationship.
In fact, he didn’t ask or consult with Darcy at all before bringing Eddie over. Darcy has been extremely cool through their whole relationship, so I get why she might be hurt by this. That hurt may now manifest in a sad way because her ex-husband wants to move away for a job. Before splitting up, they promised that if either of them ever had to move away that they would only do so if the other could–for the sake of Liam (Mattia Castrillo).
It turns out that Darcy’s company has a position in the city her ex wants to move to, and she is seriously considering going. And why wouldn’t she? Gary didn’t ask her before Eddie moved in, and as she points out, she always imagined that she would be Gary’s roommate.
Where does this leave Gary and Darcy? Tune in.
A Million Little Things Season 3, Episode 16 recap: Katherine and Alan
Katherine and Alan (Terry Chen) go on their first date during this week’s episode, and it’s not off to the greatest start. Before the date, Carter (Sam Pancake) shows Katherine that he made her a dating profile and while on the app, they see Alan’s profile.
It throws Katherine off, especially given the situations she’s been in with Eddie. There are a lot of trust issues there, and they’re really starting to show. Later on the date, Katherine point-blank asks Alan who he’s texting while he’s on his phone. He shrugs it off which prompts her to prod the situation a bit more.
Katherine tells him what happened with Carter and as she is in the middle of “confronting him”, a guy shows up with an ice cream cart. Alan remembered a story that Katherine told him about eating ice cream in the park, and he wanted to surprise her with it. The person he was texting was the guy with the cart, and not some random woman like Katherine assumed.
Realizing she has trust issues, she asks Alan to take things even slower than they have, but he’s not having it. He’s been patient through the whole process but he can’t wait forever. And while I’m not on board with ultimatums like that, I get where he’s coming from.
A Million Little Things Season 3, Episode 16 recap: Gina and Rome
Gina’s concussion continues to be problematic in this week’s episode after she realizes that she didn’t submit all the documents for the restaurant grant. Losing out on that means the restaurant won’t be able to stay afloat with what they have.
Rome is offered a commercial to do, but he initially rejects it when he hears what it’s about. It’s essentially a soda commercial that is making light of the Black Lives Matter movement. But later on, when he sees how stressed out Gina is over the restaurant, Rome decides he needs to do the commercial to help his family.
Gina isn’t so sure she can keep the restaurant running regardless of Rome taking the commercial job or not. Her memory problems have been getting in the way, and it’s not exactly the ideal position to be in when you’re running a business.
I’m not sure if this means Someday is going away forever, but I’m hoping it’s all just temporary.
A Million Little Things Season 3, Episode 16 recap: Sophie and Rome
The best part of this week’s episode is the conversation that takes place between Sophie and Rome. With everything that’s been going on in light of Sophie learning about the girl named Layla who Peter (Andrew Leeds) may have assaulted as well, she’s been having nightmares.
She’s also been thinking a lot about suicide, not necessarily committing it. After Maggie (Allison Miller) suggests that she seek out a support group of people who have lost loved ones to suicide, Sophie turns to Rome.
Rome almost killed himself on the same day as Jon (Ron Livingston), but fate had other plans and Gary’s phone call intercepted that decision. Since Jon’s death, Rome had been anticipating that one day Sophie would ask him about suicide. The manner in which Malco and Greene interact in this scene is one of the show’s best moments yet.
They’re so vulnerable, honest, and real, and hearing Rome talk about his depression, and the struggles he faces every day feels so visceral. And then him lending his support to Sophie and telling her that they are all there for her really changes things in her mind.
When she returns home later, she FaceTimes with Delilah (Stephanie Stoztak) and tells her about the conversation with Rome. When Maggie joins them, Sophie reveals that she’s been thinking about what she’d want Layla to do if the situation was reversed. She realizes that she’d want Layla to fight and take Peter down, and with that in mind, she’s ready to talk to the police.
The Season 3 finale is going to be a rollercoaster ride, isn’t it?
