The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4, Episode 9 recap: Progress
By Ariba Bhuvad
The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 gave us one hell of an episode last week with a plot twist that angrily resonated across the fandom. After the dreaded testimony, things took an interesting turn for June (Elisabeth Moss) who has been filled with more anger than she knows what to do with.
That anger increases ten-fold when she learns that Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) was able to cut a deal with the prosecution in exchange for essentially defecting to the “good side”. This doesn’t sit well with June, and I’m sure we are going to see the repercussions of that in the upcoming episode tomorrow.
The other half of the episode unexpectedly brought June and Nick (Max Minghella) back together again, in the hopes of learning more about Hannah’s whereabouts. I have to admit that I don’t exactly trust Nick, but I give him the benefit of the doubt because I know he cares for June. The verdict is still out for me on that one though.
Last week’s episode of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 was quite a wild ride, and we’re breaking down all the major moments for you below!
The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4, Episode 9 recap: Nick to the rescue
After learning that Luke (O-T Fagbenle) has been gathering information on Hannah, June is convinced to reach out to Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) for more information. He may have wanted to help, but he chose to stay out of it telling June to move on.
Surprisingly, Luke suggests that June try to contact Nick, he’s sure that he would love to help, and in the process see Nichole. Nick agrees but asks to meet at an undisclosed location so as to keep Gilead out of it as much as possible. Honestly, I thought it was going to be a trap and Nick would try to take her back to Gilead. Luckily, this does not happen.
Without even asking, Nick provides June with a folder of information about Hannah and her whereabouts. She has been living in Colorado Springs, but Nick doesn’t feel it would be very easy to get her out of there. In fact, there are Guardians everywhere which would make it near impossible.
The rest of their meeting is bittersweet and kind and makes us mourn for the life that they could have had. It’s so sad to see what’s become of them, but to see the love Nick feels for her is beyond words. And it took for this moment to happen for me to truly see that. Yes, he’s in the higher echelons of Gilead now, and *shocker* married apparently, but he has a place for June in his heart always and forever.
Sigh.
The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4, Episode 9 recap: The Waterfords
Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) and Fred are greeted by unexpected visitors, Naomi (Ever Carradine) and Warren (Stephen Kunken) at the Toronto detention center. It’s not exactly a welcome visit considering Naomi basically tells Serena to give them their baby after she gives birth. She’ll take the baby with them to Gilead where it will be raised in the “proper way”.
I truly hope that Serena understands that is exactly the type of pain and torture she inflicted on June all these years. Now she is getting a tiny glimpse of what June and the other Handmaids went through. But will she learn? Probably not.
The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4, Episode 9 recap: Fred gets a freebie
Last week’s episode ends on an emotional rager as June finds out from Mark (Sam Jaeger) that Fred is going to be their new asset. In exchange for his freedom, Fred will share all he knows about Gilead. As a result, the prosecution drops its charges giving Fred the freedom to live a life roaming the streets, the very streets many of those he tortured live on.
Mark doesn’t seem to care all that much because they’ve got Fred now, but June’s face tells us everything we need to know. She is pissed and doesn’t waste any time running after Mark screaming that Fred is a rapist and expressing her anger about them letting Fred go.
Thanks to the intervention of the agents and Luke, Mark is lucky that June didn’t get a chance to get too close. Because if she would have, he would have been a goner.
Mark better sleep with one eye open!
