Trying is more than halfway through its sophomore run and continues to prove that Jason (Rafe Spall) and Nikki (Esther Smith) are one of the best and most heartwarming television couples out there. Trying Season 2 has chronicled their continued search to adopt a child as they hit pitfalls and triumphs. Even when they’ve hit another snag, Nikki and Jason find new ways to comfort and encourage each other, often with humor.

Watching Trying Season 2 is like the equivalent of drinking a mug of the best hot chocolate you’ve ever had on a cold winter’s day. It warms you up from the inside and all the way down to the tips of your toes.

Trying is at its best when it’s focusing on Nikki and Jason, particularly when they’re working hard to overcome something, whether it be finding a new flat so they can take two children home instead of one or acclimating to new jobs to generate more income. They’re the ideal match, especially when they’re lifting each other up.

Trying Season 2 is a bright spot amid these dark times

One thing I appreciate about Trying is that it doesn’t stay static. It would be easy to see each episode get caught in a loop as Nikki and Jason commiserate about not having a kid yet but the show is always pushing forward with new momentum. Every episode presents new challenges and accomplishments for the couple to face together.

I’ve also loved seeing more of Imelda Staunton as the pair’s social worker Penny. It’s nice to see a positive representation of a social worker who isn’t depicted as the “enemy” or someone they have to fool to keep on their side. Penny is a consistent advocate for the pair and adds a lot of warmth and humor to the series. Staunton plays well off of Smith and Spall’s chemistry.

There is just so much to love about this show, it’s a bright spot and a breath of fresh air amid these dark times and I’m happy that Apple TV+ has already renewed it for a third season.
