The Boys Season 3 adds 3 new recurring supes
By Wade Wainio
According to Deadline, the Amazon Prime series The Boys will add even more recurring supes for season 3. Joining the cast regularly will be Sean Patrick Flanery as Gunpowder, Miles Gaston Villanueva as Supersonic, and Nick Wechsler as Blue Hawk.
There haven’t been many statements regarding how close these characters will match their comic book counterparts, but The Boys hasn’t been afraid to take certain creative liberties in the past. To that end, it doesn’t hurt that The Boys have such amazing talent on-screen and in the trenches, and writers who aren’t afraid to delve into these crazy characters (or put the characters inside of whales).
Previously announced new faces joining the series include Jensen Ackles’ who will appear as Soldier Boy, an on-the-nose parody of Marvel’s Captain America superhero. You will surely find pictures of the actors (new and old) by checking out The Boys on Instagram. Most fans of the series will likely be thrilled to welcome Supersonic, Gunpowder, and Blue Hawk to the lineup. The question is, what might we expect these characters to do?
The Boys and their new characters: What can we expect?
Now that these characters have officially been added to the lineup, it pays to research what they’ve been all about. If you haven’t been reading the comics, that’s fine, as we can look into these things together.
As you may know, Amazon Prime commissioned a third season very quickly, knowing that The Boys already has a strong (if not built-in) fanbase that trusts the series will find new ways to innovate. Also, because the series hasn’t feared being dark (or, at times, even mildly pornographic), we know it won’t be too quick to soften the edges of the characters as they appear in The Boys comic books.
We can note that Gunpowder is a parody of Judge Dredd who can manipulate guns and other weapons with his powers. However, it’s not known what Sean Patrick Flanery will do in his role as Gunpowder, but it probably won’t be a world of good, given his affiliation with a somewhat villainous group called Teenage Kix.
As an added roadblock, the characters of Supersonic and Blue Hawk appear to be original characters for the Amazon series, so practically nothing is known about them currently (sorry!). It’s possible they will be composites of other characters from the comic books, but that is admittedly speculative.
So what do we know?
Let’s look at the actors in these recurring roles and what they’ll potentially bring to the table. Boondock Saints devotees will probably be excited to see Sean Patrick Flanery as Gunpowder. In the vigilante action thriller Boondock Saints, Flanery stars alongside The Walking Dead‘s Norman Reedus in a unique vigilante brothers’ partnership to impose their version of truth and justice on the criminals in their city. Though not beloved by all critics, the film has a substantial cult following due to its edgy, no-holds-barred action.
Miles Gaston Villanueva has appeared in Law & Order True Crime as Lyle Menendez, of the infamous Menendez Brothers fame (and he’s also appeared in things like the soap operas The Young and the Restless and Days of Our Lives). Nick Wechsler has appeared in the series This Is Us and “Revenge, and might be recognized as the character Brad Fisher from the long-running FX series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
The Boys season 3 has an unknown premiere date, but it is currently filming and will surely be available on Amazon Prime Video sometime next year. In the meantime, one can watch previous seasons of the series, as well as the streamer’s other originals, which include things like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Tick, and Jack Ryan.
