Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist update: Lionsgate exploring ‘different scenarios’ to save the show
By Mads Lennon
If you’re a fan of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and still mourning the show’s cancellation, don’t give up hope just yet. According to a new report from TVLine, Lionsgate is pursuing some “different scenarios” to potentially save the series despite previous negotiations falling through.
For those who have been keeping tabs on the show’s documented rescue efforts, it looked like NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock would be a viable option to save the show, but talks fell through and the musical comedy remained dead.
That said, Lionsgate, the studio behind the show, is still trying to find the Jane Levy starrer a new home. A source said they’re “having a number of conversations about different scenarios.”
Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist has another obstacle standing in the way of renewal
But there is one big obstacle standing in the way of the series getting renewed for a third season, and that’s the contractual hold on the cast–which expired on July 1. That means the cast members are free to look for new jobs and if the series were to get saved, then new contracts and deals would have to be drawn up.
Showrunner Austin Winsberg took to Twitter in June to rally fans and motivate them into trying to save the series. He said he refused to believe the show really dead because of how much “love and goodwill” resides in the passionate fanbase.
It has been a rough season overall for television fans, but particularly those who are devoted to NBC shows. Freshman sci-fi drama Debris was also recently axed after one season while Good Girls also got canceled despite running for four seasons. Zoey’s Playlist ended with a cliffhanger, too, that will leave fans questioning what comes next if it fails to find a new home.
