In the Trying Season 2 finale, “I’m Scared,” Scott and Karen finally make it down the aisle at a beautiful, Secret Garden-themed wedding. Despite being the best man and maid of honor, Nikki and Jason have to skip out early on the reception when Penny rushes into the wedding and interrupts a very important moment (but more on that later).

Penny brings significant news: Princess’s placements have broken down, and she has nowhere to go. Nikki and Jason could potentially get her permanently, or it could be temporary, but either way, they have to decide whether to take Princess home right now immediately.

The possibility of taking Princess is home is obviously compelling, but Nikki and Jason had also closed that chapter and moved on. The idea of taking Princess home, getting attached, and having her removed from their care is a terrifying prospect. Yet Nikki can’t fathom leaving that little girl scared and alone in an office to be shuffled around like baggage to yet another foster home.

They agree to take her home, rushing out of the venue after a quick goodbye to Karen and Scott to retrieve their daughter! However, if you recall, Princess has a younger brother, Tyler, to who she is very attached. The children struggle to say goodbye to each other. I am a little confused about the setup since, if the placements fell through, Tyler also has nowhere to go and previously, I thought Nikki and Jason were in contention to adopt both (hence why they added another room to their flat). Why isn’t Tyler coming home with them, too?

Well, despite Tyler not being offered to the couple, he finds a way to follow them home anyway. When Nikki, Jason, and Princess arrive back at the flat, they find a stowaway in the back of the car. Tyler snuck in somehow.

After briefly panicking that they could be arrested for kidnapping, Nikki and Jason contact Penny. She tells them to keep Tyler for the night, and then the agency will decide what to do with him the next day.

Nikki gives Tyler and Princess some crayons and paper to keep busy while discussing her options with Jason. They want to keep both kids, but Jason points out they don’t really have space for two kids. “The last thing that boy wants is space,” Nikki points out, observing the fact Tyler hid in a car and is now holding his sister’s hand so tightly his knuckles have turned white.

Trying Season 2, Episode 8 recap: Jason proposes to Nikki

As foreshadowed in the previous episode, Jason does indeed pop the question to Nikki in the Trying Season 2 finale. That’s the moment I mentioned earlier that Penny interrupts. Tackiness be damned, Jason gets down on one knee after the wedding ceremony after he’s managed to find a private (and scenic) spot to propose.

But Penny interrupts before Jason can get the actual question out, and they don’t get a chance to revisit until Princess and Tyler are tucked into bed. They initially decide to circle back to the proposal later, after everything is settled with the children. But Jason decides he can’t wait any longer and proposes again in the stairwell. Of course, Nikki says yes.

The episode’s final moments show Penny looking at a big bulletin board filled with photos of children needing homes. She moves Princess from one side of the board to the other, indicating she has a new home while Tyler’s photo moves between homeless and rehomed, and the camera lingers on him. Next season will likely focus on Nikki and Jason’s fight to keep both kids.
