Showtime’s First Lady: Who is Kiefer Sutherland playing?
By Mads Lennon
Kiefer Sutherland just can’t stay away from the White House, can he? According to TVLine, the Designated Survivor and 24 actor is returning to the Oval Office in Showtime’s upcoming drama about several pivotal first ladies, aptly titled The First Lady.
Sutherland will play President Franklin D. Roosevelt opposite Gillian Anderson, who was previously announced to be taking on the role of his wife Eleanor Roosevelt.
The First Lady will be an anthology series and apart from Anderson and Sutherland, the series also stars Viola Davis as Michelle Obama, Aaron Eckhart as Gerald Ford, Michelle Pfeiffer as Betty Ford, Dakota Fanning as Susan Elizabeth Ford, and O-T Fagbenle as President Barack Obama. Davis will also executive produce the series, as will Cathy Schulman (Crash).
Kiefer Sutherland joins an impressive cast to play a president in The First Lady
Sutherland is just another impressive actor added to an already stacked cast for a show that’s likely going to be a buzzy, acclaimed affair for the premium cable channel.
Ironically, Sutherland previously played the president, albeit an unwilling one, when he stepped up to the plate in the short-lived Designated Survivor.
Susanne Bier, who previously helmed HBO’s The Undoing, will direct every episode of The First Lady Season 1. The series is said to be a “revelatory reframing of American leadership, told through the lens of the women at the heart of the White House.”
Additionally, the show is expected to explore the ways these women impacted the world with tremendous decisions that were often hidden from view. Since it’s being billed as an anthology show, each season will likely revolve around different First Ladies throughout history, tracing the journey each woman takes to Washington.
