We have more casting details for Batwoman Season 3 —a familiar face will be appearing as Renee Montoya, a popular character from the DC Comics. Victoria Cartagena will be returning to Gotham City to play Montoya, TVLine reports.

Returning, you ask? Interestingly, Cartagena portrayed Renee Montoya on Fox’s Gotham back in 2014. Though she played a pivotal role in the first season of the show, her character was unceremoniously written off shortly after.

Though Cartagena will once again be portraying Montoya, the version in Batwoman Season 3 will not be the same character. The Renee Montoya we are about to see is set to be quite different, but will likely still rely on her comic book origins for some of her story arc.

While the CWVerse’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event tied many of the DC Comics films and TV shows to the universe, Gotham was not one of them, likely because it had already concluded by 2019. Tweeting about her return to the character, Cartagena said she and Renee had “unfinished business”.

Renee Montoya was also most recently portrayed by Rosie Perez in Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn.

In the DC Comics, Renee Montoya was a major character in the Gotham Central series, and one of the rare LGBTQIA+ characters in the Big Two comics. The series followed a group of detectives, including Montoya, as they investigated crime in an increasingly costumed Gotham City.

By the start of Batwoman Season 3, Montoya will no longer be working with Gotham PD. From the character description shared online, Montoya will have left her role as a detective because of widespread corruption in Gotham PD.

According to the official description, Montoya is “righteous and pragmatic, and LGBTQ+, she’s a woman with a very personal (and mysterious) mission to help clean the streets of Gotham in the right way, by whatever means necessary,”

The previous season of Batwoman heavily leaned into the problems within not only Gotham police but the Crows organization, as well. The extreme corruption and brutality led Sophie Moore to leave her job as a Crow, as well.

According to the reports, Montoya’s new role in Batwoman Season 3 will be as head of a ‘freaks division’, which isn’t a very prestigious team, seeing as it works out of the basement of the Mayor’s office, ala the X-Files.

However, it will be interesting to see how Montoya and her team handle the costumed villains, and whether it leads to Montoya teaming up with Batwoman and Batwing.

We also know that Robin Givens is set to play Jada Jet, the CEO of a major corporation in Gotham. Will Montoya cross paths with Jet, who is rumored to be the new Batwoman, Ryan Wilder’s biological mother.

Whatever direction Renee Montoya takes in Batwoman Season 3, it’s going to be great to see Cartagena get another stab at the character. The cast for the show is already looking exciting and fantastically diverse. October 13 really can’t come soon enough.
