Hijinks, aliens, rebellious officers! According to the new trailer for the show, all this and more is coming to our screens soon with Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2.

The trailer was shared in a press release from StarTrek.com following the Paramount Plus panel discussion during SDCC@Home.

The Star Trek animated show is aimed at adults. It stars Tawny Newsome as the rebellious Ensign Mariner, Dawnn Lewis as Captain Carol Freeman, Mariner’s mother, Jack Quaid as Mariner’s best friend, the eager-to-please Ensign Boimler, Eugene Cordero as the cyber-enhanced Ensign Rutherford and Noël Wells as Ensign Tendi.

Rounding off the cast are Jerry O’Connell’s Commander Jack Ransom and Gillian Vigman’s Doctor T’Ana, the cynical cat-like Chief Medical Officer. All these characters and more will be returning for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2, alongside a host of new and familiar voices.

Following the panel discussion, Star Trek’s official Twitter page shared the trailer.

There’s a lot happening in the trailer for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2. Not only will Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford and Tendi get into more ludicrous hijinks, but they’re going to be meeting a bunch of aliens, as well as adding to the crew of the Cerritos.

At the end of the previous season, Boimler had been promoted and transferred to the USS Titan. According to the trailer, this season will see more promotions up for grabs, with both Tendi and Rutherford possibly fighting for it.

Mariner will likely have little interest in such things, even if she can better work with her high-achiever Captain mother. In the trailer, Mariner gets sent to the brig, which signifies that she commits a huge crime aboard the ship. Mariner and Captain Freeman do seem on good terms, though.

The Cerritos will also be getting a new security officer, Carl Tart’s Lieutenant Kayshon, a Tamarian. This species speaks in metaphor, and only Captain Jean-Luc Picard was successfully able to communicate with them. One can imagine Kayshon adding to the amusement this season.

We get glimpses of familiar faces, including Captain Will Riker, voiced by Jonathan Frakes, from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Frakes appeared in the first season, as well.

Robert Duncan McNeill will be reprising his role as Tom Paris from Star Trek: Voyager. As a massive Voyager fan, it gladdens my heart to see three new Star Trek shows embrace the crew of Voyager. Alongside McNeill’s guest voice appearance, Kate Mulgrew is reprising her role on Star Trek: Prodigy, while Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine returned on Star Trek: Picard.

We also see the Borg and a malevolent sentient computer voiced by Jeffrey Combs, a veteran of the Star Trek franchise, having played numerous roles in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

There’s clearly going to be tons of fun ahead, which is exactly what we need after the year we’ve had.
