Heels STARZ: 5 reasons to watch the show when it premieres

Beyond just being the new Stephen Amell wrestling show, Heels STARZ is a compelling sports drama with rich characters and heart. Heels will arrive on STARZ in less than two weeks, which means the embargo has lifted, and we can finally start talking about how enjoyable, and great this show is!

To begin, Heels is a wrestling drama set in small-town Georgia. Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig star as brothers and pro wrestlers Jack and Ace Spade, respectively. After their dad dies, Jack takes over the Duffy Wrestling League, much to his younger brother’s chagrin. Much of the drama and conflict in the first season revolves around their complex relationship.

But beyond the Spade brothers, there are lots of excellent characters to fall in love with in a dynamic town that genuinely feels like part of the story rather than just a backdrop.

If you need added incentives to watch the show, we’ve got five reasons coming at you.

5. You don’t need to know anything about wrestling to enjoy it.

Like Friday Night Lights before it, Heels STARZ is a family drama underneath the sweat, tight pants, glitter, and fog machine haze. Wrestling is a doorway into a character-motivated story. You don’t need to know anything about wrestling to enjoy the show, just like you didn’t need to love football to love Friday Night Lights.

The majority of wrestling terms are explained in a way that doesn’t feel like the show is dropping a dictionary on you. Perhaps the most important term to learn is “heels” vs. “faces,” given the show’s name. Heels are the villainous characters, while faces are the heroes.
