Ted Lasso Season 2, Episode 6, “Signal,” begins with some excellent news. Since Roy Kent has joined the coaching staff, AFC Richmond has been on a successful four-game winning streak! But the upcoming quarterfinals match against the Tottenham Hotspurs is set to be a doozy. Can they keep up their hot streak?

Pressure is on for the team to beat the Tottenham Hotspurs. Ted is excited about the match and brings his usual infectious positivity to work while still avoiding Dr. Sharon at every turn.

Later, Ted gets a call from Henry’s school. He forgot to pack his lunch for a field trip. Luckily, Michelle is there to bring it. Ted is obviously a little stressed that he’s across the pond in London and can’t be there to attend to his son’s needs. Is it a good thing Michelle is there? Yes. But I’m sure Ted feels like he wishes he could be there, too.

In the middle of the game against the Tottenham Hotspurs, Ted has a full-blown panic attack that appears to be triggered by Jamie, perhaps caused by thinking about how Jamie’s father treats him versus Ted’s own parenting struggles. Ted runs out of the game, blaming his stomach. Rebecca sees it happen from the stands. With Ted off the field, his team gets distracted, and the Tottenham Hotspurs score a goal on AFC Richmond.

With Ted gone, Beard, Roy, and Nate find themselves in a bit of a disarray. So Nate takes charge and calls the “Park the Bus” play, resulting in another goal from Jamie!

Meanwhile, Rebecca seeks out Ted in the locker rooms. She doesn’t get a chance to find him, though, before the team comes busting through the doors in exhilaration. AFC Richmond has won, and Roy gives Nate credit for the win! But Ted is nowhere to be found. Everyone chalks it up to food poisoning, although Rebecca knows better.

She calls him on her way home after the game and leaves him a voicemail to let him know she’s worried about him and she’s around if he needs her. I love their friendship so much.

In the final moments of Ted Lasso Season 2, Episode 6, Ted finally seeks out Dr. Sharon post-panic attack. “I want to make an appointment.”

Ted Lasso Season 2, Episode 6 recap: Higgins worries for Coach Beard

Early in the episode, Ted greets an exhausted Coach Beard in his office. Why is he exhausted? He got back together with Jane. While Roy, Nate, and Ted all voice their support, Higgins wonders aloud if that’s such a good idea, prompting an emergency Diamond Dogs meeting after Beard steps out to answer two missed calls from Jane.

According to Ted, it’s always better not to say anything at all. When Beard returns, he reveals that Jane’s roommates kicked her out, so now she’s moving in with him. This time, Higgins bites his tongue. I’m guessing, though, that Jane moving in with Beard is not a good plan.

Beard FaceTimes Jane (Phoebe Walsh) during his lunch break and finds out she’s planning to go to lunch with her ex, an underwear model, because he needs help going through photos from a recent shoot. Obviously, that’s not something you really want to hear from your significant other. After hanging up, Beard tries to restrain his emotions, and the camera pans out to show Higgins has overheard their entire conversation.

Higgins is distressed about Beard and Jane. He turns to Rebecca for advice, and she gives him the same words of wisdom that everyone else did. Don’t interfere. You’ll only be punished for it. Rebecca is speaking from firsthand experience regarding her parents, although Higgins disagrees. If you care about someone, shouldn’t you keep trying?

Even though everyone warned Higgins not to say anything, he does it anyway and earns a rare hug from Beard for being a good friend and caring for him. “You’re a great man. But let me ask you something, does Jane make you better?”

For now, Beard and Jane seem to be okay. After his talk with Higgins, she shows up in the parking lot and offers him a new Oliver Twist-style hat, which is “sort of “her kink, apparently. “Please, sir may I have some more?” As for her ex, sure he’s hot, but Jane says he’s painfully dim.

Ted Lasso Season 2, Episode 6 recap: Jamie confronts Roy

At practice, we get to see Roy’s coaching techniques in action. Nate looks a little jealous as the team is obviously enraptured by Roy. But Roy’s coaching doesn’t extend to the entire team as he refuses to help Jamie. Ted points out that he’s paid to coach everyone, “That’s fine just take 4% out of my paycheck.” Yikes, it looks like the Roy vs. Jamie rivalry is still going strong.

Jamie asks the coaches for help on dealing with Roy. No one wants to tell Roy to coach Jamie since Roy isn’t exactly the type to do what other people say. As Ted says, Roy and Jamie have their own history, and they need to “woman up” to talk out their issues. Keeley specifically advises Jamie to just agree with everything Roy says, like she does. “It takes the wind out of his brat sails.”

He tries doing just that, but Roy catches on quick. Ultimately things get heated between them, forcing Ted to intervene. How can Roy help make Jamie play better? He says Jamie needs to go back to being a prick, at least sometimes.

Roy blames Ted for getting in his head, making him pass and be a team player, which has made Jamie average. He needs to go back to getting in the other team’s head like only he can and scoring goals. So how will Jamie know when to be a jerk and when to not? Roy will give him a signal. “You’ll know it when you see it.”

In the middle of gameplay, the lack of aggression from Jamie proves to be a problem. So Roy gives him the signal all four coaches flipping him off in unison. Given free rein to be his true prick self, Jamie gets inside his opponent’s head, scores a foul, and then scores a goal from over halfway across the field. Half-time ends with AFC Richmond 1 and Hotspurs 0.

Ted Lasso Season 2, Episode 6 recap: Rebecca’s mother visits

Despite having a hot guy in her flat, Rebecca is more interested in chatting with her Bantr match. They’ve really hit it off. While Rebecca flirts with him over the existence of Bigfoot and guardian angels, her latest paramour Luca (Oliver Savile) waltzes naked through her kitchen. Let’s just say his lack of clothing is quite the shock for Rebecca’s surprise visitor: her mother, Deborah (Harriet Walter). Rebecca is more than a little surprised to see her mom there, especially when she reveals that she’s left Rebecca’s father.

Rebecca invites Keeley and Ted to join her for lunch with her mother. During lunch, Deborah tells everyone the whole inspiring story of why and how she left her husband. Her story rivets ted and Keeley, but Rebecca assures them that this is par for the course.

Every few years, her parents do this and then get back together again after her dad buys her mom some expensive gift to say sorry despite not changing his ways. Ted wonders if it might be different this time, people can change. “Some can. She can’t.”

Before leaving for the match, Rebecca continues flirting with her Bantr buddy while also accepting Luca’s invite for another “sexy sleepover.” Deborah tells her she won’t be going to the match as she’s planning to go to a Brené Brown reading but would love to make Rebecca her favorite dinner later and have a real chat with her. Uh-oh, does Deborah have another bombshell to drop on her daughter?

Who is Rebecca’s Bantr match?

When Rebecca gets home from the game, she finds a note from her mother. Deborah has returned to her father after he gifted her with a brand new Tesla, just like Rebecca predicted would happen. Frustrated by her mom’s bad habits, Rebecca calls Luca for a night out, opting for the easy, fun evening rather than something more emotional with her Bantr match.
