Supergirl Season 6, Episode 11 recap: Mxy in the Middle
The following article contains SPOILERS for Supergirl Season 6, Episode 11.
Following last week’s cliffhanger seeing the return of Mister Mxyzptlk, it is safe to assume Supergirl Season 6 will be getting some magical mischief.
With Supergirl trapped by Nyxly’s hand, Mister Mxyzptlk (or Mxy) is technically summoned by both women and has to decide who he will help. Considering Supergirl is not trying to imprison him, the fifth dimension Imp helps the last daughter of Krypton.
After a short magical duel, Supergirl flies herself and Mister Mxyzptlk to safety. This leads to Mxy filling in the blanks that Kara did not have or that she was lied to about. The fact that this scene was done through Thomas Lennon performing a parody of “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor reminded me how fun Mxy is as a character and the charm he brings to the show.
Side note, if you want to see more funny moments like Thomas Lennon singing and dancing, I highly recommend checking out a comedy troupe called The State. They are the actors and writers behind Reno 911!, Wet Hot American Summer, and many more classic comedies.
Supergirl Season 6, Episode 11: Nyxly’s True Origins Come Out
Mister Mxyzptlk’s song tells the story of how Nyxly was (rightfully) punished for rebelling against her father with her brother. Except rather than both being punished, only Nyxly was exiled while her brother was patriarchally rewarded. So this has led the Imp Princess to go on a quest to retrieve an ancient Imp artifact called the Allstone.
Retrieving the Allstone can only be completed by collecting the pieces of the original artifact. However, in case this story did not have enough MacGuffin’s, these totems are only found using a crystal filled with the blood of an Imp who created the Allstone. Naturally, only one descendant is remaining, and his name is Mister Mxyzptlk. Nyxly already has the crystal. Therefore the plan is to prevent her from trapping Mxy while also dampening her powers so they can try and reason with the Imp Princess.
Supergirl Season 6, Episode 11: Lena Luthor Gets Some Answers
Since she has been gone for a few episodes, it was nice to see Lena return with a vibrant glow about her in Newfoundland. This glow is because she could retrieve some answers about her birth mother, Elizabeth Walsh, including a picture of her with two of her friends named Margo Bishop and Florence Abbot. This glow is quickly subdued when she arrives at a B&B called a “dirty witch.”
After getting answers from Margo’s daughter, Lena discovers that her mother and the two women were in a coven with spells, magic, and all of that. After a spell went wrong that killed Margo’s husband, Elizabeth left with a rich man, Florence fled into hiding, and Margo was left to deal with the backlash. At this point, I knew Lena would find a way to fix her mother’s past and correct her wrongs.
With some help from Andrea back in National City, Lena is able to find Florence Abbott, who is living as a hermit. Lena finds the first-hand account is very different than what the town believes is the truth. Margo Bishop was actually being assaulted by her husband, so the three witches wanted to scare this horrible man into leaving his wife alone. The spell did go wrong, the husband and father died as a result, and the rest of the story is true.
Lena’s episodic story ends with the shocking reveal from Florence that a part of her mother’s magical abilities is within her. Since she is a woman of science and logic, Lena is skeptical of this. However, since she witnessed the vision Florence was projecting to her, it is hard for Lena to maintain this skepticism. I am hoping we will see more of Lena’s story in Newfoundland because the characters of Florence Abbott and Peggy Bishop have a lot of untapped potential about them. Only time will tell how Lena deals with the answers she has received about her ancestry.
Supergirl Season 6, Episode 11: Mxy Makes Amends
The Super Friends somehow find an empty park in National City to try and execute their plan. Dreamer is wearing Brainy’s image inducer and is disguised as Mxy so she can place the dampener on Nyxly’s wrist. The plan goes wrong, and the superfriends are trapped at Nyxly’s will. After having all of Super Friends sacrifice themselves and protect him, Mister Mxyzptlk finally shows himself. Kara tries to reason with the Imp princess and fails, but Mxy sacrifices himself because he realizes the errors of his past in having a hand in Nyxly’s patriarchal exile.
The episode ends with a great setup for the remainder of Supergirl season 6. Nyxly is headstrong in finding the totems to exact revenge on those who sent her away. This means Supergirl and the Super Friends will have to either find the totems first or prevent the Imp Princess from controlling everything in the universe. Considering the promo for next week’s episode looks to be another Kelly Olson-centric episode (I’m not complaining), I imagine it will be a couple of episodes before we return to Nyxly’s quest.
