The Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series category is a complicated one this year. For starters, while the category is actually supposed to include movies, no television movies factor into the categories at the Emmys 2021, instead it comes down to a couple of limited series and the Hamilton special.

Hamilton factoring into the Emmys 2021 caused a lot of furor earlier this year as the academy has struggled to figure out where this Disney+ special would best fit at the awards ceremony. If a Hamilton actor ends up winning, fans are likely not going to be thrilled.

It’s easy to see why people are upset because the Hamilton special on Disney+ was just a filmed version of the musical. It’s a little hard to understand why the actors would be nominated for Emmys when they’ve already received their acclaim at the Tony Awards, but I digress.

The nominees for this category include Hugh Grant for the HBO miniseries The Undoing, Paul Bettany for the acclaimed Disney+ show WandaVision, Ewan McGregor for Netflix’s Halston, and Hamilton stars Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Odom Jr.

Favorites to win for this category have been all over the map with some leaning toward Grant and others for Bettany, who reprised his MCU character Vision for WandaVision. It really could have gone either way, with one of them winning or a Hamilton star swooping info the steal. The only one not really on the map is McGregor, although he could have been a dark horse contender.

Emmys 2021: Ewan McGregor wins Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series

In a pretty shocking upset, Ewan McGregor won the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series for the Netflix series Halston. That’s not to say that McGregor didn’t deserve it or was bad in the role, just that his win was not forecasted by most of the awards predictions. It’s surprising that he beat out Hugh Grant and Paul Bettany, in particular. But still, congratulations to the actor!
