Emmys 2021: The Queen’s Gambit wins Outstanding Limited Series
By Mads Lennon
The Outstanding Limited Series category is one of the night’s biggest and most competitive categories at the Emmys 2021. Like the Outstanding Actress in a Limited Series category, this was one of the toughest categories to win of the night.
The Queen’s Gambit has consistently received tons of acclaim and picked up multiple awards throughout its awards season run. Then there is Mare of Easttown, which was a massive success for HBO. Billed initially as a limited series, there are conversations about the show potentially continuing at the premium cable network for another season.
The other nominees include Michaela Coel’s brilliant series I May Destroy You and Amazon Prime’s The Underground Railroad, based on the book of the same name by Colson Whitehead.
Then there is WandaVision, the incredibly entertaining and inventive Disney+ series that kicked off the impressive slate of MCU original series. Both stars, Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, also received nominations. It’s worth noting because the academy has rarely noticed superhero content until recent years.
It is also important to note that other popular nominees for this category, like American Crime Story and American Horror Story, were not eligible for this year’s service since they didn’t start airing until this past summer. We’ll probably see Double Feature and Impeachment at next year’s ceremony.
Emmys 2021: The Queen’s Gambit wins Outstanding Limited Series
The Queen’s Gambit won the big award for Outstanding Limited Series at the end of the night, which came as a surprise to many since the show only won an award for best directing before that. It seemed like Mare of Easttown or I May Destroy You might have won the award instead so it was pretty surprising. That said, The Queen’s Gambit received tons of praise and attention when it premiered so perhaps it’s not too surprising.
