9-1-1 Season 5 premiered this week in a typically chaotic fashion (do we expect anything less?). We had a blackout, a helicopter crash, zoo animals, and a serial rapist to contend with, and that was just the start of all the issues Los Angeles had to deal with.

The series wasted no time getting back into the thick of things as it opens to the city of L.A. with zoo animals running rampant. There is no context for this right away, which was an interesting way to start a premiere. I thought I forgot something from the season 4 premiere!

But as it turned out, zoo animals running around were the cause of cyberattacks from earlier on in the day. To add to that, each member of Station 118 was dealing with their own issues. It was the typical 9-1-1 season premiere, and I expected nothing less from it.

Now, without further ado, let’s get into all the major moments from this week’s premiere of 9-1-1 Season 5!

9-1-1 Season 5 premiere recap: Athena

In court, Athena (Angela Bassett) had to face the man who brutally beat her (ugh, I hate that episode so much!). Jeffrey Hudson (Noah Bean) is quite the creepy man, and unsurprisingly, he had a fan club in court rooting for his freedom.

He fires his lawyer and decides to represent himself, and for some reason, he was allowed to. In a case about serial rapes and battery/assault, I don’t see how that would be authorized. But for some reason, it is, and he gets right in front of Athena and all the other women he hurt.

The cyberattack eventually creeps into the courthouse, and during the chaos of it, Jeffrey makes a run for it. He’s out on the run, putting Athena and the other women at great risk of getting attacked once again.

It was assumed that Jeffrey might have tried to hide in one of his fan’s houses, but instead, he went to the lawyer he fired. Athena’s partner, Lou (Sasha Roiz), arrests Jeffrey at the lawyer’s house. It seems like all is well until the lawyer slits Lou’s throat and creepily smiles at Jeffrey.

Sorry, Athena, the nightmare is far from over.

9-1-1 Season 5 premiere recap: Eddie

Eddie (Ryan Guzman) and Ana’s (Gabrielle Walsh) relationship seems to be getting more serious, and I’m so here for it. He went with her to her niece’s christening and looked mighty good in a suit to boot.

Things are hunky-dory until while shopping, one of the salesmen calls Ana, Christopher’s mother. It’s been the first time in a long time that Eddie has been in a super-serious relationship, and so there is a lot of anxiety associated with moving on.

He’s really happy with Ana, but Eddie has a panic attack on the spot after hearing the salesmen refer to Ana as the mother. He’s been through so much before, but Eddie has a lot of emotional baggage to deal with. Let’s see how he feels in the episodes to come…

9-1-1 Season 5 premiere recap: Everyone else

Speaking of relationships, Buck (Oliver Stark) and Taylor (Megan West) are going strong, but I don’t know how long that will last. She’s really into her work, and that could get in the way of their relationship. But for now, things are going fairly well.

Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) is still struggling with her post-partum depression, and it hasn’t seemed to get better since the season 4 finale. I appreciate that the series is getting into this aspect of mental health as it is something that we don’t see discussed often. Maddie is clearly struggling, and it’s going to take a lot more than Chimney’s (Kenneth Choi) helicoptering to get her through it!
