Check out our recap of last week’s episode here!
Starting in peak Supergirl fashion, Jenga is the choice for the game night, so Kara, Alex, and the whole team can step away from the ongoing threat of Nyxly and those darn totems. They plan to try and hunt this fifth dimension Imp princess down with Lena offering her mother’s book of spells. It turns out Lena has been trying to analyze the magic her mother recently revealed to her. Nia offers her dream interpretation skills for guidance, and the adopted Luthor daughter graciously accepts.
Supergirl Season 6, Episode 14: A visitor at the tower
In the last episode, we saw William planning to help his journalistic career, which would see him embedded with the Superfriends and spending time with them in the tower. Since Kara warns Lena of William’s future presence, this plan seems to work but assures her identity and involvement with the team will remain a secret.
Alex explains that having William will likely lead to good PR for the Superfriends, which will be needed if Nyxly has her way. Kelly explains that she won’t be around at the tower because she has to check up on a little alien girl with her foster parents, but more on that in a bit.
William arrives at the tower and is understandably amazed by all of the Superfriend’s technology and resources. Before he starts writing, J’onn, Alex, Dreamer, and Supergirl lay down some ground rules set up to protect everyone’s well-being and the team’s identities. Before he can ask any questions, an alarm goes off, informing the Superfriends where Nyxly is. At an arena in National City, Nyxly confronts an MMA fighter carrying around the humanity totem.
Nyxly intimidates the fighter enough to hand the powerful artifact over and activates it. However, before she can leave, Nyxly is stopped by Supergirl but not before the Imp princess releases the totem’s power, which leads everyone in and around the arena to begin acting and fighting one another with glee and joy with a lack of humanity.
As Martian Manhunter, Sentinel, and Guardian take care of the citizens acting inhumanely, Kara talks with William about what he can report. William understandably wants to talk about Lena’s magical abilities and Nyxly, but Supergirl warns him not to talk about this information just yet so the Superfriends can keep Lena’s magic as their secret weapon. This decision aggravates Andrea, who wants more substance from William, especially considering his placement.
Supergirl Season 6, Episode 14: Lena embraces her magic
Speaking of which, Lena and Nia begin figuring out how to conduct a spell successfully. As Lena is trying to study, William arrives for a heartwarming conversation. He tells her how he learned how to be a brilliant baker like his late father by not comparing their skills and just letting the love of baking fuel his confections. The parallels between this story and Lena’s situation are beautiful and appear just what she needs to hear.
Lena realizes the ingredients she’s using are too processed, and she needs more natural plants. Following a trip to National City’s Botanical Gardens, Lena gets the wild seeds she needs while being protected by Supergirl and William. This spell makes things worse by increasing the energy of Nyxly’s blast and affecting more people nearby.
Supergirl Season 6, Episode 14: Humanity Overload
Due to the connection forged in the last episode, Supergirl realizes Nyxly is absorbing the humanity drained from those impacted by the totem. The Imp Princess cannot harm a human.
Kara plans to repeat Lena’s spell to draw Nyxly out. Lena is still terrified of her magic hurting people. She is hesitant to go through with this plan, and Kara admits she is right. So after a compromise of having the Superfriends spread throughout National City, Lena feels comfortable enough to conduct the spell again.
During the chaos, Esme’s foster parents use her alien abilities as a device of protection against the infected. This decision leads to Guardian and Sentinel coming in and protecting Esme, and little Esme loses out on another family and is sent back to a group home. The looks shared between Alex and Kelly lead me to believe their bond might mean a familial development might be occurring soon, but only time will tell.
Everything goes according to plan, and Nyxly returns to give back all of the humanity distracting her from finding the other totems. Humanity is restored, and Nyxly drops the totem off her ship, which means Kara now has one totem of her own.
William’s article is published, and his ground rules are met along with Andrea’s and the Superfriends. After Andrea tries to push for more juicy reveals, William stands up for himself and states he will only be writing what he wants, in the way he wants, and Andrea will either have to accept that or see him walk. William regaining his journalistic integrity has been so fun to watch.
The episode concludes with the Superfriends determining which totem they will go after next to try and get ahead of Nyxly for a change. After examining the remaining five totems, Dreamer points out that the dream totem, so it looks like that will be where the team goes next.
