The Big Leap season 1 episode 6 gives us a lot more insight into resident mean queen Brittney — and a lot more drama, too. With the arrival of her and Simon’s intense dance mom (a wonderfully nightmarish Missi Pyle, who would be right at home in Abby Lee Miller’s studio) and introduction of a live after show, things quickly take a turn for the chaotic.

But amongst all the tears and injuries, there are some unexpected connections, too — both platonic and romantic. Read on to learn what went down during the reality show’s premiere week.

The Big Leap Season 1 Episode 6 recap: Coming at you live

In order to capitalize on the show and its premiere, the network announces they’d like to do an after show — a live after show, much to the dismay of the people who actually have to produce it. Despite pretty much everyone under the sun deciding it’s one of the worst ideas known to man, Nick agrees, hoping this splashy event can help get his career back on track.

They, predictably, have many obstacles to surmount while preparing, including a cast that’s woefully unprepared for live Q&A, JLo dropping out of the guest host slot, and Nick getting hit in the head by a piece of equipment.

Thankfully, with Monica’s (aggressive) encouragement and the genius idea to have Reggie serve as the celebrity host, things seem to run relatively smoothly, against all the (frankly pretty terrible) odds. That is, until the whole thing turns into something reminiscent of a barfight. More on that in a minute.

The Big Leap Season 1 Episode 6 recap: Mommy dearest

In addition to the after show fiasco, the show decides to partner up unlikely duos in order to shoot a Motown promo video, and lo and behold, Gabby and Brittney get paired up. Despite their…rocky (to put it mildly) past, the two surprisingly end up bonding over a dance game. In fact, they have so much fun together that Brittney finds herself having pizza and singing High School Musical with Gabby and her family that night. She even opens up about her tumultuous past with her mother’s terrible ex-boyfriends.

Although Brittney seems to be warming to Gabby, when she finds the note Reggie wrote her professing his love, she quickly grows cold and focused on revenge again. She cries over the note to her mother, who encourages her to sabotage Gabby on the after show by bringing up her relationship with her high school teacher. During the show, a hurt Gabby fires back, telling Brittney she’s vain and lonely and doesn’t have any friends for a reason. Insults, and chairs, start to get flung, much to Wayne and Monica’s dismay. The network, however, loves it, as the stunt attracts high ratings and even got them trending.

Though her mother is proud of Brittney for figuring out how to point the spotlight on herself, Brittney feels a sense of guilt for what she did — especially after getting the gift Gabby left her: a drawing Sam made. Simon’s disgust with her doesn’t help either, and he turns on her and their mother, going to give the note he found from Reggie to Gabby.

Though shaken by the experience, Gabby’s mother comforts her, saying she’s sorry that Gabby felt so alone with this secret for so many years. After receiving the letter from Simon, Gabby shows up at Reggie’s house and kisses him.

The Big Leap Season 1 Episode 6 recap: I’ve got baggage, too

Brittney isn’t the only one to have her life thrown out of orbit with the arrival of her mother — Simon struggles with her presence, too. Though his mother tells him he and Brittney need to do everything they can for each other and no one else, his deepening feelings for Justin don’t make that easy.

Though he goes along with his mother’s plan at first, he ultimately rejects her advice, taking every chance he can to talk up Justin to the cameras. At the end of the episode, he apologizes to Justin for saying their kiss meant nothing. Their kiss — and Justin himself — means a lot to him; sometimes it’s just difficult to express that with his history. Justin accepts his apology, saying he has baggage, too, and they kiss.

The Big Leap Season 1 Episode 6: Unlikely pairings

Love is truly in the air. In addition to Reggie and Gabby locking lips and Justin and Simon’s admission of feelings, Mike is encouraged by Reggie and his friends to tell Paula how he really feels. Unfortunately, unlike the others, his night doesn’t end with a kiss — Paula rejects him, saying they’re just going to be friends.

Could it have something to do with the news Paula got this episode? We’re not entirely sure. But there’s definitely something fishy going on there, as Julia grows concerned about her after noting Paula’s worried reaction while on the phone with her doctor.

Although Paula can’t help Mike make his fairytale come true this episode, she does help Julia, using her business prowess to convince her daughters to come to the premiere. Though reluctant at first, Julia’s daughters end up having a blast and tell their mom they’re proud of her.
