After its bold premiere episode, this week’s installment of 4400 proved that this show is only going to get more exciting — and mysterious. “All Things Are Possible” introduced us to new powers, new characters, and new questions. From Isaiah’s backstory to Noah’s singing abilities, we are hooked by the way this show meshes the historical and the supernatural. Let’s take a look at what happened in 4400 season 1 episode 2.

4400 season 1 episode 2 recap: The right to remain silent

Shanice is still in the hot seat after her escape last week, with Keisha grilling her about how she managed to break out. Shanice pulls an Olivia Pope, refusing to talk and reciting penal codes instead.

With Shanice radio silent, Keisha tries a different approach, convincing Logan to try and talk to her instead. Though Logan doesn’t get any solid intel from Shanice, the two do share a sweet moment reminiscing about the past. However, it’s obvious Logan is still clearly hurt that Shanice didn’t ask for help when she was struggling right after Mariah was born. Though Shanice pleads with Logan to let her see their daughter, he doesn’t think it’s a good idea — after all, what if she disappears again?

Ultimately, it’s not up to Logan anyway, as Mariah has clearly inherited her mother’s cleverness and ability to sneak around. After eavesdropping on their conversation, Mariah gets mad at Logan for keeping her from Shanice and ends up taking it upon herself to go to Shanice’s hotel room alone.

Keisha and Jharrel are still butting heads about the best way to help our time-traveling crew. Not only that, but Soraya — a tech expert — also worms her way into their little team, shaking things up as well. Soraya investigates how Shanice managed to leave and agrees to use her skillset to continue helping them. (Her crush on Keisha might have a little something to do with it, too.)

Keisha continues to question Hayden as well — the kid who gave her a message from Jharrel’s missing brother Manny. Keisha tries to follow up with him about the cryptic sentence, but Hayden won’t elaborate. Things get even more complicated when Hayden refuses to go to Belle Isle with the rest of the group.

Despite the complications, Jharrel isn’t giving up hope that he’ll find his brother. At the end of the episode, he sees the beginning of a clock drawn on the hotel wall — a game he and Manny used to play together.

4400 season 1 episode 2 recap: Healing and hypnosis

After discovering her mysterious healing powers last week, Claudette continues to test her limits, even convincing Ladonna to break her finger. Sure enough, the bone heals immediately, which delights Claudette. This could be a major asset in helping her escape.

Claudette isn’t the only one finding out what she’s capable of. Mildred continues to test out her gifts, opening a cage with a locked-up box of candy with Hayden and Noah. When a guard catches them, Noah discovers that his singing has hypnotic powers, and he manages to distract the guard before they can get in trouble for stealing the snacks.

4400 season 1 episode 2 recap: The true calling

Though it’s told all of the new measures are for their “safety,” it’s clear the group is being punished for Shanice’s escape last week. Not only are their favorite snacks locked up and their piano removed, but they all now must wear a GPS ankle band as well. A guard even gets violent with Noah when the group begins to sing during a headcount.

Desperate to get back to his life, Isaiah convinces Keisha that they should all try going back to Belle Isle to see if returning to the scene will blast them back to the timeline they belong. While they’re there, he enlists Mildred and Noah to demonstrate their powers while he preaches the fact that they’re all special and have been brought here for a reason. Everyone is taken with his words, but Claudette still doesn’t trust him.

And she’s not the only one. In a flashback, we see that Isaiah had been secretly dating a woman named Darlene and that she was even pregnant with their child. However, his very religious family didn’t approve of Darlene, and he was torn between being with the person he loved and being a preacher like his father wanted.

Darlene finally convinced Isaiah that he loved the church so much not because he wanted to serve God but because he loved the power and manipulation it gave him. Isaiah eventually made the decision to turn his back on this family, selling an expensive ring his father gave him in order to start a life with Darlene. However, before he could do so, he was transported to 2021. He is taking this as a sign that a life with Darlene was not in the cards for him and that preaching is his true calling.
