9-1-1 season 5 takes an interesting turn during this week’s episode, “Defend in Place,” as it opts to focus on two characters we haven’t seen much of — Michael (Rockmond Dunbar) and David (La Monde Byrd). Their relationship was front and center this week, as Michael decides he is going to propose to David before he moves to Haiti to do missionary work.

Unfortunately, things aren’t off to a great start when a literal explosion gets in the way of Michael’s big plans. It’s a pretty classic 9-1-1 episode filled with twists and turns and gut-wrenching moments that had us on the edge of our seats.

There is a lot to talk about, so let’s get into all the wild moments of this week’s episode of 9-1-1 Season 5 — and be sure to share your favorites in the comments below!

9-1-1 Season 5, Episode 8 recap: A proposal delayed

After David shared that he was going away to Haiti, it got Michael thinking about their future together and how he simply couldn’t live without him. This prompted him to decide to propose with the entire family’s support behind him. Harry (Marcanthonee Reis) and May (Corinne Massiah) helped Michael pick out rings for David, while Athena (Angela Bassett) helped Michael pick out the perfect outfit. What a lovely family, if I do say so myself.

With all the plans in place, Michael headed to the hospital to pick David up from work, but before he walks in, there is a huge explosion from inside the hospital. The explosion was caused accidentally by oxygen tanks and flammable liquid coming together, and it created quite a tense situation for everyone all around.

Inside the hospital, evacuations were being ordered, but David decided to continue doing the surgery he had already started — removing a patient’s brain tumor. Eventually, Bobby (Peter Krause) got inside the room to save David, but it was a very tense hour waiting for this to happen, with poor Michael freaking out while waiting outside.

David wasn’t ready to leave the surgery, but after Bobby told him that Michael is waiting outside to propose to him, it certainly changed his mind. I know he spoiled the proposal, but I think in this case, we can forgive Bobby for doing so.

And just in case you were wondering — he said yes! Yay to love! Oh, and Micahel is going to Haiti with him!

9-1-1 Season 5, Episode 8 recap: Elsewhere in the hospital

There was a lot more going on in the hospital outside of Michael and David’s proposal, and admittedly, it had me in my feels. There was a cancer survivor who sacrificed his life to make sure his favorite nurse would survive and a young boy who saved his newborn sister’s life.

Between these two stories, our hearts were breaking and on edge, but I’m happy to report that most people made it out alive. (Except the cancer survivor, may he R.I.P.)
