Though Hayden is initially skeptical of doctors, he agrees to help Andre after Andre promises to help him with women. Millie is enjoying the chosen family she’s finding with the group and doesn’t want to go back to her old life.

But things take a turn when Andre touches Millie to examine her while she tests her powers. Millie panics, breaking several glass bottles and even the chandelier. Hayden is furious, telling Andre that he was right not to trust doctors and that he clearly only cares about his research — not them.

Shanice and LaDonna both try to cheer Andre up, with LaDonna sneaking code books she’s disguised as magazines from the library and Shanice promising there’s no rush to get answers. Andre confides in Shanice about his past, sharing that he cured his girlfriend Cynthia with his bronchitis research but couldn’t manage to do what she really needed: be there for her. Andre was so caught up in his work that his relationship suffered for it.

Andre tells her it’s okay and that he doesn’t want to pull away from people he cares about anymore. He nervously shows her the memory of Noah telling him about being trans — his way of coming out to Shanice as trans, too. Shanice immediately accepts him, and the two kiss.

At the end of the episode, Andre discovers a secret room through a hidden door of the bar. What could be in there? Or what could the group use it for?

4400 season 1 episode 4 recap: Project reintegration

While Andre is toiling away in his makeshift lab, a few people are getting a taste of freedom. After the video LaDonna leaked goes viral, the authorities decide they need some good PR and select four people to go on a day trip to prove they’re not a danger to the public: Isaiah, LaDonna, Shanice, and Claudette.

Isaiah and LaDonna don’t want to see their families yet, instead requesting to go to the library. There, LaDonna looks for books that might be helpful for deciphering the code she and Isaiah found. Jharrel teaches Isaiah how to use the library computer to find out what happened to his family’s church, and he learns some less-than-savory information. Not only did the church profit off his disappearance, but the son he abandoned is speaking out about how he’s glad he wasn’t raised by Isaiah because he and his family are intolerant and allow damaging reparative therapy.

Keisha accompanies Shanice and Claudette to Mrs. Grover’s house, as Shanice isn’t ready to face Mariah again yet. Claudette is amazed by how different the city looks and is in awe of Mrs. Grover’s stories about the Obama inauguration. The three of them drink Moscow mules together, and when Keisha leaves the room, Claudette even demonstrates her healing powers.

Though Claudette tries to be sneaky about it, Keisha sees her demonstrating her powers through and window and is shocked. She keeps the secret from her girlfriend Jessica, who confides that she thinks her team only gave them the day passes so something would go wrong and the group would be seen as a danger. Though Keisha is clearly disturbed by this, she lets it go, and the two of them kiss.

Jharrel is not particularly enthusiastic about the day trip either, annoyed that it’s just another PR stunt. Though Carla agrees, she tells Jharrel that some people have to play the game and system in order to make money — not everyone has the freedom to go rogue like him. She does admit, however, that she’s just as frustrated as him deep down and says she thinks the authorities know more than they’re letting on.
