Yellowjackets season 1 episode 2 recap: Is Misty the villain?
The plane finally crashes to the ground, the girls scrambling out as it goes up in flames. All of them panic in the chaos — especially when they realize they’re trapped in the middle of nowhere. To make matters worse, the pilot is dead, and a coach’s leg is stuck underneath the wing of the plane. Misty takes the decision to amputate the limb in hopes that he’ll survive.
In fact, Misty manages to take control in many ways, armed with the knowledge she gained from her Red Cross babysitting class. She problem-solves the issues of disinfecting the wounds by finding a bottle of alcohol in a makeup bag and even makes the difficult choice to burn the rest of the coach’s leg off to stop the bleeding at one point. The girls admire her skills and appreciate her, which means a lot to her considering she’s used to being the outcast. It means so much to her, in fact, that she destroys the distress signal from the plane so they’re trapped there, dependent on her.
Meanwhile, Natalie tries to comfort her friend Travis, the son of another coach who has been impaled on top of a tree. Travis climbs the tree to try to rescue him, but the branch falls, and he is clearly dead on impact. Travis is devastated, unable to even hold it together for his brother Javi. On that same tree, a mysterious symbol can be seen. What could it possibly mean?
Jackie, wracked by guilt, tries to take control and continue being a leader, telling everyone they should conserve food. The girls all sit around the campfire and get a small moment of reprieve when Laura Lee admits she thinks God is punishing her for calling her piano teacher a bad word in her head. They all share stories of the most outlandish bad things they’ve ever done.
Yellowjackets season 1 episode 2 recap: What happened to Travis?
In the present day, Misty tries her luck at love. Unfortunately, she’s way more into the prospect than her date Stan is. She’s still clearly insecure from getting called ugly in high school and overcompensates, pressuring Stan to come inside her house though he’s not interested.
When she gets home, however, she’s greeted by Natalie with her gun. Natalie accuses Misty of sending her a postcard with the cryptic tree symbol, but Misty is adamant it wasn’t her, showing the same postcard she received to Natalie. Natalie seems somewhat convinced, and the two go to a bar. Natalie thinks whoever sent the postcard is trying to mess with them — it feels like a threat. Misty thinks maybe it’s Jessica, the woman who claimed to be a reporter with a book deal. Misty also mentions to Natalie that she found Travis, which piques Natalie’s interest — Travis has made it very clear he doesn’t want to be found.
Natalie tries to call Travis that night with a number she got from his friend Kevin, but it doesn’t go through. Still, Natalie is determined to find him, planning to drive up north to see him. Unfortunately, her car breaks down — something Misty is suspiciously there to help with. She offers Natalie her car, and Natalie begrudgingly drives them both to see Travis.
Yellowjackets season 1 episode 2 recap: Will Shauna stay in touch with Adam?
Shauna is having car trouble, too, in the form of a fender bender. Luckily, Adam, the guy she rear-ends, is understanding — and attractive. He flirts with her, saying exchanging insurance won’t be necessary since her car got the worst of it. He gives her the number of a body shop, and it’s later revealed he’s the owner of said body shop when he calls to ask her why she hasn’t come in. Shauna admits she can’t afford to repair the damage right now, and Adam promises her it will be free — on the condition she has dinner with him.
But not all is well with Shauna. She and her husband’s sex life is suffering, and when they attempt to do the sexual fantasy roleplaying their therapist suggests, it turns out awkward and catastrophic. Her husband also gets mad when he finds out she didn’t tell him about the accident right away.
Shauna rediscovers her power in slaughtering one of the rabbits in her garden again, chopping it up and putting it in the soup for dinner. She tries the fantasy with her husband again, and this time, it’s successful. But the relief doesn’t last long, as she snoops on her husband’s phone while he’s in the shower and finds he’s cheating on her.
Yellowjackets season 1 episode 2 recap: What’s haunting Tai and her son?
Tai is going through her own familial issues, as she gets into a fight with her wife after missing her son Sammy’s parent-teacher conferences. Her wife reveals that Sammy’s teacher is concerned with the fact Sammy doesn’t have many friends, but Tai says there’s nothing wrong with being a loner.
However, when she tucks Sammy in, she herself grows concerned. Not only is Sammy sad he doesn’t have anyone to play with, but he’s also covered his window with photos so the “lady in the tree” can’t see in. Beyond that, when Tai makes shadow puppets on Sammy’s walls to entertain him, she herself is haunted by the image of a wolf.
