Hawkeye episode 2 recap: Will Clint take Kate under his wing?

Kate fangirls when she realizes it’s none other than Hawkeye who stepped in and helped save her, though Clint is less than thrilled, saying Kate is just a kid. He walks her to the apartment, grilling her on whether anyone saw her face under the Ronin mask. Though she’s adamant her identity remained a secret throughout the fight, there’s one little problem — she dropped pizza dog off at her apartment before going to Armand’s, and her name is on the buzzer.

Hawkeye tells her he made a lot of enemies when he wore the Ronin suit, one of which was the Tracksuit Mafia, who is after her. The Tracksuit Mafia sets fire to her apartment, and Clint and Kate must flee to Kate’s aunt’s apartment fore safely. Clint tells her to stay put while he recovers the suit from the fire, but when he gets there, it’s gone.

Though Clint is irritated about having to look after Kate, he does take good care of her, properly cleaning her wounds. The news is wondering if Ronin is responsible for Armand’s death, which panics Kate. Though Clint wants her to stay at the safe house until he can locate the suit, Kate refuses — she has to go to work at her mom’s security company so she doesn’t get suspicious.

Clint’s children are suspicious of the cuts on his forehead and worry that he won’t make it home in time for Christmas, but he promises that he’ll make it happen by any means necessary. While escorting Kate to her mom’s security office, he gives her his number for emergencies only, saying that he’s going to attempt to solve everything by the end of the day so they won’t need to meet up again.

Clint follows the one lead he has: an NYC LARPing bumper sticker on a car outside Kate’s apartment. He goes to a LARPing activity, but they will only let him in as a participant. He reluctantly signs up, doing the sword-fighting roleplay in order to talk to the man who took the Ronin suit. The man agrees to give it back on one condition: Clint lets him kill him in the roleplaying exercise so he can feel like a hero.

Once Clint successfully gets the suit back, he calls Laura to warn her he’s going to miss his flight and be a few days late. In order to solve the Ronin issue once and for all, he’s going to pull a catch and release — one of Nat’s old moves. He intentionally gets himself captured by the Tracksuit Mafia in order to speak to their boss. They question him about Kate, but he holds strong.

Kate is still extremely suspicious of Jack — even more so now that Armand is dead. Jack acts patronizing toward her, saying she’s feeling threatened by having a new presence in her mother’s life. The two continue to make digs at each other during dinner, where Kate grills him on his knowledge of swords.

This leads them to fence after dinner, where Kate grows increasingly frustrated when Jack keeps letting her easily win. She pulls a maneuver to trick him into showing his real skills, telling her mom that this is proof he’s hiding something. Her mom, however, doesn’t listen to her, thinking instead she is just getting panicked about the uncertainty in her future.

When Jack hands her a butterscotch she saw in Armand’s apartment, she quickly excuses herself to go call Clint. She gets nervous when a voice tells her Clint can’t come to the phone, and she tracks his location via the security app she has access to. She busts in where he’s being held, and the Tracksuit Mafia go off and tell their boss Echo that they now have both Hawkeye and Kate held hostage.
