The Walking Dead: World Beyond Season 2, Episode 9 recap
The plan to escape the CRM with the scientists and research might work — that is, until Mason acts rationally and costs one character their life. The Walking Dead: World Beyond is wrapping up in a way perhaps no one will be expecting.
Episode 9, titled “Death and the Dead,” proves how costly the mission is for everyone involved. What’s more, the episode reveals why the CRM functions as it does.
The Walking Dead: World Beyond Season 2, Episode 9 recap: The plan falls apart
The episode begins with a little surprise twist, as Iris and the group did not escape down the tunnels as Jadis expected. Instead, they attached explosives to several walkers the scientists used for tracking and from above are detonated to kill CRM soldiers.
Through the walkie-talkie, Dr. Bennett speaks to Jadis to negotiate their freedom via Mason. Turns out he was quite the valuable bargaining chip.
The group decides to split between Dr. Bennett and the scientists and Iris, Hope, Percy, Felix, and Mason. Felix and Hope plan to place explosives in Lyla’s lab when Hope is almost killed by her as an empty.
In the process of killing her, Hope remembers how she was promised (more so lied to) about how safe and wonderful the CRM is. However, Hope coming to grips with how horrible the CRM is cannot compare to the discovery that the chemical gas is gone.
Iris wants to stay and try to find it, believing Mason probably knows of its whereabouts. However, the group ultimately decides that they need to leave and continue with their plan.
Meanwhile, Silas and Dennis await medications to treat his bullet wound, but it turns out there is none left. Elton manages to remove the bullet, and the two leave Dennis behind to continue the mission.
While they are luring empties to the CRM, they make a pitstop to pick up antibiotics for Dennis. Silas has a run-in with Webb, but he is later killed by empties.
Even though they retrieve the medical supplies they need, they still have to escape. Enter probably the unintentionally funniest moment of the series.
Silas and Elton use the Earth artwork done by Indira as a human hamster ball and make their way to safety.
The Walking Dead: World Beyond Season 2, Episode 9 recap: Who didn’t survive
Empties are surrounding the CRM fast, and time is running out. Jadis and Jennifer meet with Hope, Iris, Felix, Percy, and Mason with vehicles at the ready.
Jadis finally lets it be known that the reason the CRM attacked Omaha was to make the inevitable deaths somehow quick and painless. The CR figured out that there would not be enough supplies to keep every community alive in the long run.
So to prevent future famine, disease, and chaos, which would later lead to the CR’s downfall, they decided to kill everyone in Omaha. A majority of which would be used for research (as was explained previously).
This explanation just aggravates Iris and the group more, and before they can act, Mason makes a move to escape. Percy follows close behind as bullets fly from both parties.
Jennifer kills several soldiers and turns on Jadis, who surprisingly did not see it coming. After the shooting ends, Iris finds that Percy had been killed as he tried to retrieve Mason.
This tragically puts an end to the possible future Percy had wanted for himself and Iris. Angered, Hope is preparing to kill Mason, as he is to blame for Percy’s death.
Even in her grief, Iris convinces Hope not to kill him, and the two escape with Felix. As more empties begin to surround them, Jennifer hesitates to kill Jadis.
She instead kills some empties with Jadis to save Mason. In the chaos, Jennifer escapes and makes her way back to Dennis, who is still alive — but just barely.
The two exchange a heartfelt moment; however, it is implied he doesn’t survive, as not long after, Jennifer is seen heavily crying.
The Walking Dead: World Beyond Season 2, Episode 9 recap: Not all hope is lost
Hope, Iris, and Felix make it to the meeting place, but Dr. Bennett and the other scientists are not present. It seems they hit a spike strip on the road.
Felix leaves to help them out. Hope, Iris, Silas, and Elton, the core four since the beginning, reunite at the meeting place.
Hope relays the bad news of their failed plan to save Portland, but it seems all hope is not lost just yet.
They receive a message from Jennifer on the walkie-talkie asking if they still have explosives. Hope confirms this, and it is revealed that Jennifer has found the missing chemical gas that will be used on Portland.
How will The Walking Dead: World Beyond wrap up?
It is exhilarating to see a small group come together to try to bring down a larger-than-life society in such unfortunate times. They have come very far, but will it all be for nothing?
With The Walking Dead and Fear The Walking Dead still ongoing, how do we know the CRM won’t pull through in the end? If that be the case, I’d hope at least that Portland is saved.
The Walking Dead Universe will be full of triumphs and strategies, but it would be nice to see some kind of victory by the end of this series. We still don’t know what the writers/showrunners have in mind, and there may be a lot more to explore once the Rick Grimes films make it to the screen.
I am dreading one particular outcome, but I’m not sure if this would be something daring enough or dumb enough to happen. Not with a very passionate fanbase watching intently.
I look forward to the final episode and truly hope all will not be lost to the CRM.
