Where have you seen Yellowjackets actress Sophie Nélisse before?
By Taylor Gates
Part coming-of-age drama, part full-blown survival horror, Yellowjackets is a series that manages to expertly toggle between several genres. Examing the aftermath of a plane crash that left a girls’ soccer team stranded in the woods fighting for survival (and occasionally, with each other), the show is one of the riskiest, most interesting new series to premiere this year. The show is packed with a cast of talented actors, including big names like Juliette Lewis and Melanie Lynskey. Sophie Nélisse plays the younger version of Lynskey’s character — perfect casting, I might add. Read on to learn where you may have seen Nélisse before.
Sophie Nélisse plays young Shauna
Shauna is one of the more outwardly grounded, well-adjusted characters in the show — though it’s clear there’s a darker side to her as well. One of the first traces of this is when Shauna sleeps with her best friend Jackie’s boyfriend. As an adult, it’s evident she still has this edge to her, mercilessly butchering a rabbit in her garden and having a strange relationship with her husband.
Sophie Nélisse got her start in French-language cinema
A French-Canadian actress, Nélisse is fluent in both English and French and got her start doing French-language projects, such as Monsieur Lazhar, for which she won several awards, including a Canadian Screen Award and Jutra Award for her supporting role.
Sophie Nélisse’s breakout role was in The Book Thief, which is based on the bestselling novel by Markus Zusak. Nélisse played the lead role and won rave reviews for her performance, winning the Hollywood Film Festival Spotlight Award and the Satellite Newcomer Award.
Nélisse has appeared in several films since, including the titular role in The Great Gilly Hopkins and indie drama The Rest of Us alongside Heather Graham.
