Yellowjackets season 1 episode 5 recap: Is Shauna pregnant?

This week on Yellowjackets season 1, a seance gets spooky, and Shauna keeps a big secret. Meanwhile, in the present day, Tai is terrorized by someone close to home, and Misty and Natalie make a shocking discovery.

Yellowjackets season 1 episode 5 recap: Who’s the father of Shauna’s baby?

Everyone’s cycles have synced up — except for Shauna’s. She tries to brush it off, telling Jackie her period is simply late this month, but Tai quickly figures out the truth: that she’s pregnant. We as the audience know Jackie’s boyfriend must be the father.

Despite this, Shauna tries to be a good friend to Jackie. The other girls are noticing she’s not pulling her weight, and Shauna tells her she needs to start contributing or else the others will turn on her. Jackie emotionally tells her she’s not good at this whole wilderness thing like she is and she isn’t sure how long she can survive out in the woods. Shauna tells Jackie that she’s the one who gave her the confidence to be the badass she is and that her mere presence is encouraging.

This gives Jackie the idea to rally everyone for a seance to see once and for all if there is in fact a ghost in the house. She sets up the attic, putting candles over the same mysterious symbol that’s been carved in the floor. Though everyone asks silly questions at first, it turns somber when Javi asks the spirit if they’re going to die out there.

The seance gets ever more intense when Lottie becomes possessed, saying in French that the spirit wants blood and took her already. She slams her head against the window and is only saved when Laura Lee throws a book at her and calls upon Christ’s intervention. Despite all this, Tai is still adamant there are no ghosts, even going to sleep in the attic to prove it.

Misty is still trying to take care of Coach Ben, much to his dismay — or so we think. Misty gives him tea, which makes him cough up blood, and he freaks out on her, asking why she poisoned him. The conversation takes an odd turn when he tells her he knows she likes him. Not only that, but he admits he likes her, too. He apologizes for losing his temper, saying it’s only because he can’t control himself around her. Not only is it illegal and unethical, but the other girls would be jealous, too — it has to be their little secret. Misty, floored he likes her back, agrees to keep it just between them.

Yellowjackets season 1 episode 5 recap: Is Jackie dead?

In the present day, Shauna is struggling to rein in her daughter Kelly, who wants to go into the city for Halloween. Shauna tells her she can’t — she has to stay home and hand out candy while she “goes to book club” (aka heads to a Halloween party with Adam).

When she and Adam arrive at the party, however, she runs into none other than Kelly, who’s high on ecstasy and wearing a Yellowjackets uniform she found in Shauna’s closet. Kelly is not too happy about spying her with Adam, telling her that he only likes her because of her famous Yellowjackets past. Shauna tells her she never even told Adam about that, but Kelly wants her to get real: one Google search, and he would know.

Things get more serious when Kelly asks Shauna when she fell out of love with her dad. Shauna tells her their relationship is complicated and there is a lot of baggage between them — like Jackie. The uniform Kelly is wearing was actually Jackie’s, as her parents gave it to her on her 40th birthday to remember her.

The next morning, Kelly tries to blackmail Shauna into letting her do whatever she wants because she knows the Adam secret. Shauna, however, turns the tables, telling her she would have no college fund or life if she and her dad got divorced. With this, Kelly reluctantly covers for Shauna, saying she went to a party and had to call her mom to pick her up last night.

Yellowjackets season 1 episode 5 recap: How did Travis die?

Natalie gets a call from Kevin telling her that he got an email saying Travis’ toxicology report is clean — and that he would like to hang out again. Natalie, however, ignores the second part, focusing instead on the toxicology report and enlisting Misty’s help breaking into his email to get the full picture.

Natalie and Misty meet with her email contact, threatening to light him on fire unless he gives them the file. The threat works, and they get the information, including disturbing photos from the crime scenes. Mistry notices there’s a symbol with wax on the barn floor where he died — the same mysterious symbol as in the woods.

Natalie invitees Tai over to show her the photos as well as a text she got saying she needs to get $50,000 and await instructions. The two of them decide to call Shauna, and it’s revealed that Misty is watching all of this unfold via a diffuser gift she gave Natalie.

Yellowjackets season 1 episode 5 recap: Who is threatening Tai?

Things aren’t going great for Tai, either. Not only is she having some regrets about blowing up at Diane, but it’s clear something is still terrorizing her family. When her dog starts barking uncontrollably about what she thinks is a wolf outside, she grabs a knife and is determined to go kill it. However, when she gets outside, she doesn’t see a wolf but rather the words “spill” in red paint on her home. Her wife tells her it’s time to start playing dirty with her opponent.

Things, however, get complicated when Tai finds a can of red paint under Sammy’s bed. When questioned, he says the lady in the tree did it. When his moms tell him to stop lying, he knocks everything off the table and says he’s not. Tai’s wife thinks he’s acting out because Tai’s been so exahusted and stressed lately and he misses the mom he used to have.

Tai considers dropping out of the race but ultimatley decides against it, blaming the red paint on her opponent at a press conference. She addresses what happened in the woods, saying it taught her that they can overcome anything as long as they have community. She refuses to drop out of the race no matter what anyone writes on the door. While she’s addressing the press, she sees the eyeless man that’s haunted her since she was young.
