Yellowjackets season 1 episode 9 recap: Is Jeff the blackmailer?
Shauna confronts Adam about stealing her journals, asking him his true identity, but he promises he has no idea what she’s talking about. Her case seems to get even stronger when she sees a Yellowjackets magazine in his drawer, but he’s adamant he simply wanted to understand her better after learning who she was via Google. Overwhelmed, Shauna stabs him, giving her flashbacks to the woods.
When Shauna gets home, however, she finds her journals are back in the safe. Panicked, she asks Jeff if he knows where the glitter in the closet came from. Jeff admits he got into trouble with some loan sharks since the store was struggling and blackmailed Tai to get money. He swears that Shauna was never supposed to get involved.
Jeff wants to forget any of it ever happened, but Shauna says they can’t, telling him about stabbing Adam and their affair. She defends herself, saying he’s having an affair, too, but Jeff tells her the woman she saw him with was with the loan people.
Jeff wants to take the fall for Adam’s murder, coming up with a story about how he found out about the affair and killed Adam by accident when he went to confront him. Shauna tells him he can’t — if they go to the cops about that, surely they’ll dig deeper and discover what the Yellowjackets actually did in the woods. Their entire family’s lives would be over. Shauna is shocked when Jeff admits he read her journals about what she did in the woods years ago but still loves her regardless.
Yellowjackets season 1 episode 9 recap: Will the others believe Shauna’s story about Adam?
Jessica, now chained to a wheelchair in Misty’s basement, encourages her to open up about the plane crash. She asks Misty if the other girls ever reached out to her in the last 25 years considering they all stay in touch.
Misty ignores the question, instead asking Jessica for advice on her makeup before her reunion. She tells her she does want to talk to a ghostwriter after all, and she and Jessica devise the perfect thing to say to get the public to sympathize with her. After all, all the girls were just trying to survive, and Misty was the first brave soul to break her silence.
Meanwhile, Tai and Natalie’s lives are in shambles. Natalie, still on drugs, breaks a vending machine to get candy. It’s election day for Tai, but her mind is elsewhere, too devastated that Simone and Sammy have moved out. She ruined a 15-year marriage for this campaign.
Shauna tells them to come over to Adam’s apartment, telling them that he was the blackmailer and was threatening her, which is why she killed him. She cries, saying she trusted him and thought he loved her. The two of them have little sympathy, as Tai thinks she was careless to have an affair with him, and Natalie is mad he’s dead and can’t tell them anything about his motives. They devise a plan to figure out what to do with the body, leading Natalie to go to Misty and apologize, asking for a big favor.
Yellowjackets season 1 episode 9 recap: What happened at Doomcoming?
In this episode of Yellowjackets season 1, the girls’ morale is suffering in the woods. Jackie is refusing to eat entirely, saying there’s no point since they’ll all be dead soon anyway. One of the Yellowjackets pulls out a jar of berries she thinks has turned into alcohol, and they all decide to have a Doomcoming dance with the dresses they brought for the awards ceremony since the next night is a full moon.
Tai and Van are by far the cutest couple at Doomcoming, even wearing matching masks since Van is self-conscious about her facial injuries. The two kiss and go public — something that Ben thinks it admirable. They end the night with Tai taking Van’s mask off to see her more clearly, telling her she’s beautiful.
Jackie tells Shauna all she does is think about what they’d be doing if the plane hadn’t crashed, saying the mistakes they made now are permanent. Jackie vows to have sex with Travis so she doesn’t die a virgin — something Shauna doesn’t want her to do under the guise of him just breaking up with Natalie. Jackie asks if she’s jealous, quipping she wouldn’t want them going after the same guy, clearly still bitter about Jeff.
During Doomcoming, Jackie slow dances with Travis and tells him she wants to have sex with him. It’s clear he’s still thinking about Natalie, but Jackie tells him he’s naive. She didn’t even really like Jeff all that much but was upset Shauna betrayed her by sleeping with him. It made her realize love and friendships are just distractions from death. This convinces Travis to kiss her, and the two have sex.
Misty gives Ben a flower to ask him to the dance. She’s embarrassed when he hesitates, saying she knows she’s not pretty. Ben feels bad about this, saying he’ll go to the dance with her but making it clear there are still boundaries between them. Misty is elated, asking Jackie boy advice while she helps her with her makeup. Jackie tells her that she deserves to be with someone who really wants to be with her.
It quickly becomes clear that person is not Ben, as he encourages Misty to dance with Javi instead of him. Natalie gets jealous upon seeing Travis and Jackie together, inviting Ben to go drink real booze with her. While the two are talking, they begin to feel the effects of Misty’s mushrooms that one of the girls mistakenly put in the pot of stew, and everyone begins tripping.
Under the influence, Lottie tells the girls that something big is coming and that they won’t be hungry much longer. She says they need to find Travis and Jackie, as Travis doesn’t belong to her. They all hear wolves beginning to howl and howl back, going feral.
It’s clear Travis isn’t all there mentally after having sex with Jackie, asking if they disappeared. Jackie is confused by what he’s saying, growing even more confused when all of the girls confront her about having sex. Lottie locks Jackie in a closet, saying she doesn’t matter anymore, and the girls all sit Travis in a chair and begin to kiss and touch him. Travis hallucinates that they’re all trying to kill him and tries to run away. They chase after him with knives, Shauna even telling Javi — who’s hiding in a bush — to run.
Still with Ben, Natalie says it’s pathetic she’s crying about a boy when they’re all about to die. Ben, however, says it’s the opposite: love can save them all. Misty overhears this and tells him he’s right, beginning to kiss him. Ben quickly pushes her off, harshly telling her he’s gay.
Natalie goes back to the house to tell Travis the truth and is shocked to find Jackie locked in the closet. She breaks her out, and they get to the group just in time before Shauna can stab Travis. Natalie is horrified, but Lottie tells her “it” wanted them to do this to Travis and “it” is in everyone — even her and Travis.
