The second episode of How I Met Your Father season 1 starts with Future Sophie carrying on with her story and saying it’s about the journey, not the destination. She also mentions that she will be talking about a lot of dudes before that, so we all better strap in.
In 2022, Valentina is trying to convince Sophie not to sulk about Ian and listen to “Drops of Jupiter” by Train on repeat. Sophie agrees, and her bestie reveals she already is on the list for a new club called FOMO that has rooms for everything where you will never be left out. Valentina admits this will also be her way of breaking things off with Charlie because he is smothering her.

Sophie eventually convinces Valentina that he just needs more friends than Charlie, so she DMs Jesse, who they had drinks and played drunk Jenga with last weekend. As Jesse receives Sophie’s DM, he and Ellen are helping paint the upper walls of Pemberton’s. Sid is delegating while also wallowing in the fact that his bar hasn’t reached its potential yet with regulars ordering their usuals.
Before Jesse can decline, Sid and Ellen convince him to accept, with his sister getting excited about her first big night out in NYC. As they all meet up in the line outside, however, Sophie gets a minor interruption. Right before they head into the club, Sophie receives a text from Ian that is something of a Jason Momoa lookalike — a trend the two of them have been doing since they started texting.
After some hesitation about if she should respond or not and the group agreeing she shouldn’t, Sophie decides to ignore Ian. As they are entering the club, the host gives them little stickers to put over their cameras since no photos are allowed inside FOMO. Around this time is also when Jesse talks it over with Sid about how Sophie isn’t really into him but is convinced otherwise when they overhear Valentina requesting a good table since “tonight is a set up.” They are convinced Valentina is talking about setting up Jesse and Sophie, not Charlie with them.
Inside the club, Ellen tries to make eyes with other women, Sid has the time of his life with old-school candy, and Charlie struggles to behave not-aristocratic. Jesse and Sophie begin talking, and we hear Future Sophie at the exact moment she realized Jesse was an available and sweet guy.
How I Met Your Father season 1 episode 2: Jesse tries to shoot his shot
Jesse says he will get them drinks and meet her in there, but that is when Sophie spots a Jason Momoa lookalike in the club that she dubs “FOMO-Moa.” Because she can’t pass up this opportunity, Sophie tries to sneak a pic before being thrown out for breaking the club’s rule. After Jesse realizes Sophie isn’t coming, he returns to the group to find out the news and that this whole night out was about Charlie, Jesse, and Sid being set up as friends.
After Valentina and Charlie talk through her feeling smothered, they end up breaking up after Charlie takes offense and is hurt. Valentina goes to the curb with the kicked-out Sophie to comfort her and help keep her spirits up after a tough emotional night. Charlie follows Jesse and Sid back to Pembertons, where Sid mixes a martini for their new friend from across the pond. The three of them get to talking and discover they all complement one another well.
The ladies eventually show up where Valentina and Charlie have a talk, and they agree to take some steps back in their relationship so he won’t be smothering her anymore. Ellen is celebrating her successful night out while Jesse struggles to work the bar’s jukebox, leading to a conversation between him and Sophie. She apologizes for leading Jesse to misunderstand what the night was about, and they bond over being messes. They agree to be friends for now since friends that are a mess are better than two messes dating.
As they all sit around the bar bonding, “Drops of Jupiter” plays because that is also Jesse’s comfort song. Future Sophie closes the episode by reminding the audience that there will always be somewhere else to be or someone else to be with, but it’s important to remember to sometimes just…be.
