Euphoria season 2 episode 2 recap: Will Cal hurt Fez because of Nate?

In this episode of Euphoria season 2, Cassie and Nate grow closer — but must keep their relationship a secret lest Maddy find out. Cal tries to get to the bottom of who beat up his son, Rue grows closer to Elliot, and Kat feels like she’s missing something in her relationship.

Euphoria season 2 episode 2 recap: Will Cassie and Nate keep seeing each other?

Nate thinks about his relationships while in the hospital — namely about how different Maddy and Cassie are. While everything is a game to Maddy, Cassie is pure; Maddy brings out the worst in him, while Cassie may bring out the best. He could picture himself starting a family with Cassie and vows that he would be a better father than his own dad.

Though Cassie says she wants to go on an abstinence journey, it’s clear she’s miserable being single — and hopelessly falling for Nate. She calls him, hysterical and insecure, and he reminds her that Maddy would kill them if she ever found out they hooked up, which spooks Cassie.

Despite this, Rue spies Cassie getting in Nate’s car, and neither he nor Cassie answer their phones when Maddy tries to reach them. Nate tells Cassie what happened between them was a mistake and they can’t see each other anymore…but the two of them end up leaving the car to hook up on a staircase anyway.

Euphoria season 2 episode 2 recap: Will Cal hurt Fez?

Cal is determined to find out who beat Nate up and goes to Cassie and Lexi’s house to interrogate them. Cassie gets afraid by the threat of the police going through their phones, as she texted Nate about the two of them having sex. Since it’s in writing, Maddy could find out if that were to happen.

Lexi is livid that Cassie told Cal about Fez, as she’s clearly into him despite being a little freaked out about him being violent to Nate. Lexi spirals about always being so passive in her life and goes to warn Fez about Cal at the convenience store. Cal comes in while Lexi is still there, asking Fez a lot of personal questions. For a moment, it looks like he’s going to pull a gun, but he ends up simply handing Fez the money for the things he’s buying.

Cal confronts Nate that night about Fez being the one to beat him up, and Nate tells him the truth: that it all stems back to him having sex with Jules. He was just trying to protect him from that and the tape — the tape that Maddy now has.

Though from the outside it looks like Kat’s relationship is perfect, she’s having trouble feeling the spark — he’s almost too nice, and she wants a stronger, more dominant man like the guy in the fanfic she wrote. She hates herself for feeling this way and doesn’t feel like she can talk about it with anyone.

She invites Maddy and Jules along on her bowling date with Ethan, and Maddy tells Jules that she’ll never have the kind of sweet, pure love that Kat and Ethan do — she needs something with more darkness. She admits she doesn’t think she’s going to be able to stop herself from getting back together with Nate, and Jules says she wishes Maddy could see herself the way the rest of the world does.

Euphoria season 2 episode 2 recap: Will there be a Rue/Jules/Elliot love triangle?

Much like the beginning of fall semester, Rue is happy to be with Jules at the beginning of spring semester — but Elliot is presenting some complications. She’s been hanging out with him lately, doing drugs with the money he makes from his music. Jules gets jealous Rue has a crush on him, even though Rue assures her she doesn’t.

Rue bails on Jules’ dinner invitation to go hang out with Elliot instead, and she tells him about how drugs are the only things that make her feel like herself and that she never would have talked to him otherwise since she’s shy. She tells him about falling in love with Jules but has realized that loss is a bigger feeling than love — something she found out when she lost her dad. However, Rue thinks she’d still be doing drugs even if her dad was still here.

Elliot doesn’t think the two of them bring out the best in each other, but Rue is okay with that. She goes to her NA meeting, where Ali immediately knows she’s not clean and won’t let her ride her bike home. He drives her instead, going inside to introduce himself to her mom. Her mom asks if Rue’s doing well, and Ali simply says she has a long way to go but that he did, too, at her age.
