How I Met Your Father season 1 episode 6 recap: Stacey

Sophie and Drew go on their first getaway and Valentina discovers something about Charlie’s past in this week’s episode of How I Met Your Father season 1.

The sixth episode of How I Met Your Father season 1 begins with Future Sophie explaining that technology of her 20s and 30s found a way to bring your past to your present. In that aforementioned present day, Sophie and Drew are enjoying the joys of their new romance while Sophie’s friends play along as all good friends should. Sid returns to Pemberton’s with Hannah, who has a weekend free to look at wedding venues. The newly engaged needed some company on their trip, and after Jesse thinks his best friend will ask him, the fiancées ask Sophie and Drew instead.

How I Met Your Father season 1 episode 6: A weekend getaway for the couples

Charlie is settling into his new job as a bartender for Sid but is struggling a little bit. However, his paychecks are coming in so he is planning a big party to celebrate his milestones since arriving in New York. He even tells Ellen to invite the first woman she has been with since her divorce, but Ellen passes. Hannah explains that she won’t be there since she will be on a trip with “Stacey and Drew” when she actually meant Sophie. It turns out Stacey was Drew’s ex, so Sophie spirals with Valentina’s help back at their apartment, which mostly includes Valentina showing off her massive social media investigation skills.

At Charlie and Ellen’s apartment, they both realize a party on a bartender’s paycheck can only go so far. As the guests arrive, Jesse brings in the new woman he has been seeing, Mia, and she and Ellen share shocked looks. As they take a little sidebar that Charlie shows up for, it’s revealed that Mia is the woman she lost her post-divorce v-card to. Ellen begs her to keep their fling a secret to protect her brother and his heart. Mia agrees — but only because Jesse has done nothing wrong to her and she is an “empath.”

How I Met Your Father season 1 episode 6: Sophie finds out about Drew’s ex

Sid, Hannah, Drew, and Sophie are all looking at a fancy and romantic venue, and Sophie is trying to relax on this elegant date. Sophie keeps remembering pics from Drew’s ex’s Instagram account and Sophie realizes Drew has been at the fancy restaurant before with his ex. Sophie is freaking out because she is doing the natural reaction to focusing on your current partner’s ex even though their relationship is in the past. When Sophie notices the plates are the same exact ones from Stacey’s profile, she excuses herself from her friends.

Back at Charlie’s party, Mia is teasing Ellen about her housewares coming from her bedroom while the discussion of Sophie freaking out about Drew’s ex comes up. Valentina explains how she doesn’t understand the fascination of worrying about exes, especially because Charlie does not mind — except that he does. Charlie explains he hates when Valentina talks about her past partners to where Valentina gives Charlie free reign to do the same thing. Charlie then explains he actually once traveled to Brazil to live with a woman there, exactly like he did with Valentina and the US.

The party comes to a screeching halt, with Valetina very upset and Mia sharing her cookie-cutter knowledge of the world. After a possible coincidence in conversation about colonialism, the former British socialite reveals he has not moved to another country for a woman just once or just twice, but multiple times for multiple women in multiple countries. Because she does not want her relationship with Jesse to start off on a lie like Charlie and Valentina’s, Mia blurts out she slept with Ellen. This naturally makes Ellen ticked off while grossing out Jesse but making it officially a memorable party.

How I Met Your Father season 1 episode 6: Valentina questions Charlie

After dinner, Sid and Hannah end up having a heated conversation about how Hannah does not like how Sid quit medical school just to buy a bar on a whim. Hannah is upset that Sid did all this without consulting his serious and long-term girlfriend about it all. In the room down the hall, Sophie accidentally DMs a screenshot of the guest book with Drew and Stacey’s names on it to Stacey herself. This leads to Sophie making the natural decision to take Drew’s phone and run into the hallway which was perfect since Stacey did in fact text Drew about Sophie’s DM. In the hall, Sophie and Sid wallow in their shared mistakes.

At the party, the timeline is deduced that nobody’s relationship overlapped regarding Ellen, Jesse, and Mia. However, when Mia goes on about her feigned activism, that is when Jesse snaps and explains he was just trying to push through because he hated being single. Valentina gets out Charlie’s passport and runs through the countries he has been to for women. Charlie attempts to mend this schism with Valentina by stating Valentina is a part of some pattern, but Valentina struggles to believe him.

In the hallway with Sophie and Sid, the one who is engaged explains that everyone has an ex so he doesn’t understand Sophie’s frustrations. She explains that she has never been in a serious relationship so she does not understand what it’s like to have an ex. Sid explains he actually bought the bar because it was the first thing in his 27-year life that he did to make himself happy. He acknowledges Hannah would have supported him, but he had to do it right then or he would have chickened out. Sid gives her some words of wisdom that the path with the right person always works out.

How I Met Your Father season 1 episode 6: Exes are natural…for some

Charlie shows up at Valentina’s apartment to explain that his past traveling escapades never felt right until he did it with Valentina. To prove this, Charlie lights his passport on fire (after soaking in lighter fluid) as a way of saying he is not going anywhere. The two end their argument by admitting their love for one another as a trashcan burns Charlie’s passport. At the hotel, Sid makes up with Hannah as they agree to make more decisions together.

This episode ends with Sophie returning to Drew, who had seen Stacey’s replies on his laptop. Both Sophie and Drew apologize for their own respective shortcomings since Drew did lie about coming to this venue. In actuality, Drew and his ex had a big fight on their date at this same location so he wanted to leave that part of his life in the past. The two make up and have a wonderful night together — something Future Sophie’s son didn’t want to hear about.
