How I Met Your Father season 1 episode 8 recap: The Perfect Shot

As Sid gets an unwelcome visitor, Sophie and Jesse empathize with the other about being an artist in this week’s episode of How I Met Your Father season 1.

The eighth episode of How I Met Your Father season 1 kicks off with Future Sophie touching on her struggles as an emerging artist in her youth. This anecdote continues the story from last week which saw Sophie be allowed to have one of her pictures be presented by her idol, Naomi Reisberg (played by Tessa Auberjonois), in one of her art shows.
How I Met Your Father season 1 episode 8 recap: The (artist) struggle is real
Present-day Sophie is struggling to find “the perfect shot” that Naomi requested of her, even with hundreds of photographs. Jesse is in a similar situation with him being excited about his recent studio time and the music he recorded for the first time since his breakup.
Because of his expenses, Jesse tells Sid that he will be late on rent this month which leads to Jesse and Sophie bonding over being struggling artists who have to live on the cheap to survive.
Sophie then leaves to go take some more pictures. Right after she leaves, her friends discuss how they are not looking forward to attending the fundraiser Drew invited them all to.
In his apartment, Sid is getting ready for the fundraiser when someone knocks on his door. When he opens it, he finds an unwelcome guest in the form of Jesse’s ex who broke his heart, Meredith (played by Leighton Meester).
She wants to talk to Jesse and since he’s not here she will leave, but Sid tells her to wait for Jesse since he will be back soon. In his apartment’s hallway, he calls Ellen to have her meet him at Pemberton’s because of a “Code M.”
How I Met Your Father season 1 episode 8 recap: Valentina’s work problems
At her job, Valentina is seen doing 99% of the things her boss asked of her with that 1% not being her fault but rather the result of a miscommunication. Valentina’s boss then goes on to verbally abuse Valentina but does so through a doll.
He leaves after threatening to publicly fire her when Charlie comes in ahead of the fundraiser. Due to her boss being a large Richard, Valentina decides to swipe a four-figure Chanel purse from her work since her boss never checks the accessories closet. Charlie is worried about it but Valentina is too ticked off at this moment to think straight.
During Sophie’s city walk to find that eponymous shot, she ends up chipping a tooth. She calls Jesse for his cheap dentist so she can get it all fixed ahead of tonight’s festivities. At the waiting room, Jesse and Sophie meet some interesting characters with parallels to their own since most of the waiting patients are creatives like them aspiring for their big break.
At Pemberton’s, Ellen is debriefed about Meredith being in Sid and her brother’s apartment. They try to figure out their endgame with Jesse’s ex which leads to them freestyling a bit until Meredith makes her presence felt. Sid gets a fake text from Jesse which has all three of them go back to the apartment Meredith just came from.
How I Met Your Father season 1 episode 8: Sophie takes her shot…
Valentina and Charlie are hanging out at the fundraiser when Valentina gets a text that her boss knows the Chanel purse is missing. Valentina decides to get the purse back before the auction starts only for Drew to announce it is beginning at that moment. She chooses that she will buy it back only for another patron to bid $15,000 making Valentina immediately back out.
Charlie decides that he will swipe the purse for Valentina since he loves her more than he hates stealing. His pick-up is clean but as he walks away Charlie bumps into a waiter, causing a commotion, only for Charlie and Valentina to make a run for it.
While they are on their way to the event, Jesse’s car stops leading to Sophie chipping her tooth again. As they are pulled over, Sophie begins to spiral about her career choices only for Jesse to be there for her explaining how she is an incredible photographer and an amazing person.
This takes Sophie by surprise a bit with a hint of sexual tension when Sophie sees that Jesse working on his car is the perfect shot. They end up having to walk to the event the rest of the way.
How I Met Your Father season 1 episode 8 recap: …and Jesse takes his
Sophie and Jesse arrive at the fundraiser and Drew greets them immediately. As Jesse goes off and mingles, Sophie and Drew are left chatting. It turns out Drew offered Jesse a full-time music teacher job that he turned down to focus on his passion, something Drew doesn’t morally agree with. Sophie asks if he feels the same about her and her photography and Drew states the same thing which leads her stunned and hurt.
When they arrive back at the apartment, Meredith tells Sid and Ellen that she recorded a new album with a major label and her first single is being released tomorrow. Sid and Ellen are now at the bar with the responsibility of informing Jesse of this news. They hold off until tomorrow since he had to step out a phone call from a tow company about his car.
When his call is over, Sophie walks up and he is surprised since she should be with Drew. Sophie explains they got into a fight since Drew doesn’t support her like other people do as Jesse proved tonight with his words of support. Jesse theorizes that maybe Drew is the wrong guy for Sophie before the two share a passionate kiss to end the episode.
