After a seventeen-year hiatus, Ewan McGregor has returned as the titular Jedi master in the latest Star Wars and Disney+ live-action series, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

While the prequel trilogy was a polarizing and meme-filled laughing stock in George Lucas’ iconic multimedia franchise for so long, there were still a handful of positives that all fans could rally behind. While the lightsaber duels were well choreographed and filmed and John Williams’ iconic score was never in doubt, it is hard to argue that Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan was the constant premier element in these three movies.

Now, over a decade and a half later McGregor is back, and he is not alone. Like most non-Skywalker characters, Obi-Wan has a lot of mystery and untold stories about him and this series looks to flesh those hidden elements out.

This series will also share a focus on the aforementioned Skywalkers since Kenobi was one of the only constants in both Anakin and Luke Skywalker’s lives. But having the perspective of Obi-Wan is a refreshing take for this galaxy far, far away.

We have the return of the hater of sand himself, Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader.

The actual extent of his involvement has been hush-hush but considering there is a strong following of Christensen’s role in Star Wars, any involvement will likely (and hopefully) be celebrated. Other actors who have undisclosed roles are Kumail Nanjiani, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Simone Kessell, Benny Safdie, Maya Erskine, and Rory Ross.

Obi-Wan Kenobi release date

The short response is that Obi-Wan Kenobi will be premiering on Disney+ starting May 25th, 2022, with the first season consisting of six episodes all directed by Deborah Chow. While this date might sound just like a regular date to some, for Star Wars fans this is a special anniversary.

45 years ago on May 25th, George Lucas’ first space opera was released about a farm boy who found himself fighting his imperialistic overlords. This date was obviously a happy accident that Disney and Lucasfilm are capitalizing on, but it is still an amazing detail all the same.
