Steven Grant’s life continues to spiral out of his control as he finally meets the mysterious Layla and discovers why the Egyptian golden scarab is so important. Moon Knight season 1 episode 2 “Summon the Suit” answers all of that and places our hero in a battle of morality.

Will the Egyptian god of the moon be able to help answer Steven’s questions? What about the man named Marc Spector?

After the previous episode’s events, Steven wakes up in a panic, falling to the floor of his apartment. His leg is still attached to the wall strap, so he assumes he had another vivid dream.

Upon starting his workday, he notices the restroom is off limits. He and the security officer look at the surveillance footage which shows Steven running away from something that can’t be seen.

He’s called into the HR office, with some good news and bad news. Good news is the museum will not press charges for the sustainable damage, bad news is he’s fired.

They suggest he speak to someone and sends him on his way. Steven talks to the living statue from the night prior about his problems and decides to visit the storage locker he has a key to.

When he does he finds a lot of weapons, money and a cot. But more importantly the golden scarab.

It levitates, pointing him in a direction that isn’t north. His reflection, Marc speaks to him asking him to sleep on the cot and allow him take over.

Marc is the avatar of Khonshu and must do his work. Terrified, Steven takes the bag of money and weapons and flees.

While doing so the Egyptian god of the moon himself, Khonshu, appears chasing him. When Steven manages to make it to the street he’s nearly run over by a motorcycle.

It’s Layla; she has been tracking his phone. Trying to understand what is happening he asks her to take them to his apartment.

There they bond over their love of the same French poet and find out that she and Marc Spector are married and he’s asking for a divorce. Utterly confused he tries to explain to her that he’s not Marc but Steven Grant.

He’s completely baffled as to why Marc would want to divorce her. He wants to show her the golden scarab, but Marc warns him not to show her.

She finds it anyway. There is a sudden knock on the door and two supposed cops barge their way in.

Layla escapes out the window and onto the roof with the golden scarab. Steven is taken and on the car ride they reveal to him how Marc is a horrible man who killed several archaeologists in Egypt.

The car stops and Steven realizes they are not cops. Arthur Harrow arrives and frees him, thanking his colleagues.

Arthur introduces Steven to his home which is full of people seemingly enjoying their lives. The setup which is oddly familiar to a cult, bewilders Steven.

Arthur reveals that he used to be Khonshu’s avatar and that he is not to be trusted. The reason they need the golden scarab is because it will lead them to the tomb of the Egyptian goddess of divine retribution Ammit.

Arthur’s goal is to rid the world of evil before it spreads. Steven interprets this as practically killing a child before they could ever attempt to do something wrong.

The conversation turns further south when Arthur demands to have the golden scarab. Layla arrives claiming she has it and orders Steven to summon the suit.

Steven does not and cannot, fearing the evil deeds Marc has done and they run. When they are cornered in a locked room with a demonic jackal about to kill them, Steven has no choice but to summon the suit as he falls out the window.

The suit isn’t what we saw in the first episode but rather a dapper suit. Marc complains to Steven through the reflection about his choice in suit before the demonic jackal returns.

Layla cannot see the demonic jackal and the fight becomes more public. Passersby assume it’s a drunken man in a weird costume.

Marc begs Steven to give him control with the promise of returning control once he’s done. Steven allows it and the original Moon Knight suit returns.

He leads the demonic jackal away from the crowd and successfully kills it. After the fight Marc realizes that the golden scarab is missing.

Layla discovers that Arthur Harrow now has it.

Moon Knight Season 1 Episode 2 recap – Marc Spector

Feeling utter defeated Marc speaks to Steven through a mirror. Steven is confused as to why Marc will not allow him to take control again.

Marc tries to explain that Khonshu wants Layla to be his next avatar. He doesn’t want to put her through that.

He must repay the debt to Khonshu and once it’s over Steven will never have to deal with him again. The two argue over the situation leading Marc to violently kick the mirror until it shatters silencing Steven for now.

Khonshu appears, informing him that Arthur has the golden scarab. Marc doesn’t let the bad news sway him, believing they will find a way to get it back.

Khonshu is still unsure about everything especially about Steven’s constant interference. Marc assures him everything is under control.

The episode ends with Marc in Egypt overlooking the pyramids of Giza.

Moon Knight Season 1 Episode 2 review

Episode 2 left a lot to be unpacked but after watching it I am more certain than ever that Steven Grant is not the main identity. It is and has been Marc all along.

Marc has some sort of personality disorder that either he never told Khonshu about or simply assured Khonshu it wouldn’t affect their deal. But why was Arthur chosen to be Khonshu’s previous owner and how did he manage to free himself?

How long has Steven Grant not been in control so that Marc could meet and marry Layla? Why have we not seen Ammit with Arthur as we have seen Khonshu with Steven?

This episode, as I assume the others that follow, play well with reflective surfaces. It doesn’t always have to be a mirror and the differences between American, confident Marc and English, terrified Steven are quite something.

It speaks to the actor; Oscar Isaac’s range, and I am quite impressed. Now that, assumably Marc, is in Egypt, I look forward to the new setting and what environment episode 3 is setting up.

Is there a secret organization in Egypt that is aware of the Egyptian gods taking human avatar forms? Does Arthur Harrow have cult members in Egypt already?

Will Layla catch up with Marc and will she be told the truth about who Steven Grant is? Once again, I look forward to what is in store for our main character and the consequences that could follow as I’m sure Marc and Steven will battle for control.
