Jeffrey Dean Morgan had big boots to fill when he first stepped out of the RV on The Walking Dead season 6 episode 16 titled “Last Day on Earth”. Fans are still torn between loving the charismatically violent leader and utterly despising him.

Throughout his time on the AMC series, Negan’s past was a mystery for those who only watched the show but haven’t touched the comics they are based upon. But little by little, his story began to take shape.

If we’re being honest with ourselves, the Negan of season 11 is hardly the one we remember since the fateful day he killed Abraham and Glenn with his beloved bat, Lucille. Out of all the moments he’s been known for there was one thing in particular that was never addressed, until season 11 episode 14 “The Rotten Core”.

Leader of the Saviors, Negan, had a very direct and clear leadership style of his home, The Sanctuary. You earned your keep and if you broke the rules, you were punished.

One Negan mystery may have finally been resolved on The Walking Dead.

While we didn’t see what The Sanctuary looked like before he became the leader, it sounded as though it was very unruly, chaotic and practically uncivilized. If you happened to be a woman, who couldn’t earn enough points to support your family, he may have provided the option of becoming one of his Wives.

This would be one of the more controversial aspects of Negan as a whole. One such wife was Sherry, Dwight’s wife who took the role to spare her husband.

In season 7 episode 3 titled “The Cell”, Dwight and Daryl meet with Dr. Carson where Sherry also happened to be. The trio discover her pregnancy test to be negative.

In that moment, so many questions swirled from; is Negan trying to get his wives pregnant to can he get them pregnant at all? This moment is never addressed again.

Even when Negan’s past is unfolded in the very beautiful and emotional episode of season 10 episode 22 “Here’s Negan”, the mention of children is never brought up. It was apparent Negan liked kids from the get-go, having bonded with both Carl and Judith.

Negan’s bond with Judith grew exponentially after he’s imprisoned at Alexandria and now, he’s practically a father figure for Lydia. So, what’s going on?

As mentioned earlier, “The Rotten Core” reunites Negan with Maggie, Aaron, Gabriel, Elijah and Lydia, while revealing that he’s married and going to be a father! This development was also met with conflicting reactions from fans, but we now know that he was always capable of having children.

Does this mean that his first wife Lucille could not? Does this mean his chosen wives could not, or were they trying at the wrong time or were they taking some form of birth control behind his back the entire time?

In all honesty, we may never know. But what we do know is that this may be Negan’s one and only chance to become a parent and his chances of a happy ending are absolutely 50/50. We know he and Maggie will be teaming up in next year’s Isle of the Dead spinoff.

However, there hasn’t been any mention of his wife Annie or Maggie’s son Hershel. Are both characters staying behind?

Will something happen to either character before The Walking Dead series finale? We’ve already seen Hershel taking a liking to Annie so perhaps she watches him while Maggie and Negan head for New York?

Until we get more information, this will all remain a mystery for now.
